New rules released in India will force social media companies to create "grievance redressal mechanisms" for Indian users reporting problematic content on the platforms. Social media companies must also identify person(s) behind certain content violations according to the Indian government.

Companies who do not comply with the rules could face penalties including the charging and imprisoning of executives.

The new rules also allow for a future implementation of a code of ethics on certain platforms.
