Gandhi’s Nai Talim

Nai Talim / Basic Education: Gandhi’s model of education for life, through life and throughout life; it seeks integration of Head, Heart and Hand.

Core Principles:
1. Productive craft at the centre – vocation/craft should be the core of learning, not a separate subject.
2. Learning by doing – knowledge develops through direct practice and productive work.
3. Whole-child development – education must develop physical, intellectual, moral and emotional faculties.
4. Craft as a learning medium – manual skill should also teach reasoning, mathematics, science and social understanding.
5. Self-supporting education – productive activity should make schooling partly economically self-sustaining; profit is not the objective.
6. Dignity of labour – rejects hierarchy between manual and intellectual work.
7. Mother tongue – early education should be through the regional language, suited to local needs.
8. Character formation – truth, discipline, responsibility and ethical conduct are central.
9. Community-rooted learning – curriculum should arise from the learner’s local social and economic environment.
10. Universal ethics – moral education should transcend sectarian religious teaching.
11. Skills for self-reliance – practical skills should provide livelihood capability, beyond certificates/degrees.
12. Lifelong learning – education should extend beyond classrooms and examinations.

Present Relevance
• NEP 2020 link: experiential learning, vocational education, mother tongue, holistic development and reduced separation between academic and vocational streams.
• Counters rote learning, degree-centric education and skill–education divide.
• Can promote self-reliance, dignity of labour, civic responsibility and locally relevant education.

Major Gap Today
Gandhi is often taught as textbook symbolism, while his real educational ideas- craft, community work, ethical formation and learning through productive activity- remain weakly implemented.

Conclusion: Nai Talim was not merely vocational education; it was Gandhi’s attempt to create self-reliant, ethical and socially conscious citizens through the integration of knowledge, work and life.

Adjournment Sine Die & Prorogation
1. Adjournment = postpones a sitting of the House to a specified date/time; it does not terminate the session.
2. Adjournment sine die = termination of a sitting without fixing any date for the next sitting; done by the Presiding Officer (Speaker/Chairman).
3. Prorogation = formal termination of a session by the President under Article 85(2)(a); normally follows adjournment sine die.

4.Understand concept: Adjournment sine die ≠ Prorogation - the House may remain adjourned sine die for days/weeks while the session legally continues until prorogued.
5. Dissolution terminates the life of Lok Sabha, whereas prorogation only terminates a session; Rajya Sabha is not subject to dissolution.
6. Pending business does not lapse merely because of adjournment or prorogation; dissolution has different consequences for pending business.
7. Current context: The 8th Session of the 18th Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on 13 August 2026; by late September, the gap had become one of the longest such intervals in parliamentary history.

Note: Adjournment —> Sitting | Prorogation —> Session | Dissolution —> Lok Sabha itself.

Answer: (D) Only 4

1. Summoning = Convocation —> TRUE. Summoning means calling the House to meet for a session. Under Article 85(1), the President summons each House of Parliament. Thus, “summoning” essentially means convocation of the House.
2. Prorogation ends a session —> TRUE. Prorogation terminates an entire session, not the life of the House. Rajya Sabha’s official parliamentary practice specifically states that “prorogation means the end of a session.”
3. Dissolution terminates a House —> TRUE. Dissolution brings the life of the Lok Sabha to an end. Rajya Sabha is a permanent House and is not subject to dissolution.
4. “Prorogation can be effected by the Leader of the House alone” — >FALSE. The President prorogues either House under Article 85(2)(a). The Leader of the House cannot prorogue Parliament on his/her own.

Note:
Adjournment —> Sitting ends | Prorogation —> Session ends | Dissolution —> Lok Sabha itself ends.

Poompuhar
1. Poompuhar (Kaveripoompattinam) —> ancient Chola port city in present-day Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu, located at the mouth of River Cauvery on the Bay of Bengal.
2. It was an important Sangam/post-Sangam maritime trade centre and is associated with the early Cholas; archaeological evidence suggests habitation from around the 5th–4th century BCE.
3. Recent underwater excavations by Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology + Indian Maritime University found West Asian “torpedo jar” fragments, terracotta ring wells and 250+ ceramic fragments.
4. Torpedo jars were long ceramic vessels used mainly to transport liquid cargo such as wine/olive oil across maritime trade routes —> evidence of Poompuhar’s links with West Asia and the Mediterranean.
5. Chola merchandise bore the tiger emblem; Poompuhar traded with regions including Southeast Asia, Arabia and Rome.
6. Submerged ring wells, brick structures and a possible palaeochannel indicate shoreline change/submergence; major parts of the city are believed to have been lost to coastal flooding/sea-level changes around the 4th–5th century CE.
