Pulses, Nitrogen & Agriculture
1. Nitrogen fixation: Atmospheric N₂ is converted into biologically usable nitrogen compounds; nitrogenase is the key bacterial enzyme involved.
2. Nitrogenase is oxygen-sensitive; therefore, leguminous plants provide specialised low-oxygen conditions for nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
3. Root nodules: Legumes form nodules housing symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria; plant supplies shelter/food while bacteria provide usable nitrogen.
4. Legume–bacteria symbiosis is estimated to have originated about 100 million years ago; legumes subsequently diversified rapidly.
5. Early pulses in India: Lentils and dals occur in early archaeological/literary records; mung, urad and tur are indicated to have originated in India, while chickpea likely did not.
6. Kalibangan (Rajasthan), an Indus Valley/Harappan site, has yielded evidence of chickpea.
7. Vedic food reference: Kosumalli—> soaked mung dal and cucumber preparation—is mentioned in connection with ancient food traditions.
8. Manasollasa: A 12th-century Sanskrit encyclopaedic work associated with King Someshvara III of the Western Chalukya dynasty; contains references to dals/food preparations.
9. Green-manure legumes: Dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) and sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) help replenish soil nitrogen.
10. Guano: Nitrogen-rich deposits of seabird/bat excreta, historically important as fertiliser; Peru’s offshore Chincha Islands were a major 19th-century source.
11. Haber–Bosch process: Industrial synthesis of ammonia (NH₃) from atmospheric N₂ and H₂ at high temperature and pressure using a catalyst; developed from Fritz Haber’s laboratory process and industrialised by Carl Bosch/BASF.
12. Nobel link: Fritz Haber —> Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1918) for ammonia synthesis; Carl Bosch —> Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1931) for development of high-pressure chemical methods.

Panama Canal & El Niño
1. Panama Canal is an artificial waterway in Panama connecting the Atlantic Ocean (Caribbean Sea) with the Pacific Ocean; it uses a lock system and freshwater from artificial lakes.
2. El Niño-induced drought reduces rainfall and water levels in the canal’s reservoirs, forcing authorities to reduce ship crossings and permissible vessel draft.
3. The canal is about 80 km long and is a major global maritime chokepoint, carrying roughly 5% of world maritime trade.
4. Concept Link: El Niño = abnormal warming of the central/eastern equatorial Pacific, capable of altering global rainfall, winds and atmospheric circulation.

Individual Responsibility & Bystander Effect
1. Core idea: Collective failure often begins with individual inaction- when everyone assumes someone else will act, nobody acts.
2. Bystander Effect / Diffusion of Responsibility: As the number of people present increases, individuals may feel less personally responsible for taking action.
3. Powerful analogy: If everyone replaces their pitcher of milk with water, believing their small act will remain unnoticed, the entire tank eventually contains only water.
4. Governance & Citizenship: Democracy cannot function merely through good laws and institutions; it requires responsible citizens who refuse to outsource their civic duties.
5. Environment: “My individual action makes no difference” can collectively produce pollution, waste and climate degradation. Small irresponsibilities, multiplied by millions, become systemic crises.
6. Public ethics: Corruption, injustice and discrimination often survive not only because of wrongdoers but because others witness them and choose silence or convenience.
7. Teamwork/Administration: In organisations, assuming that “someone else will do it” creates accountability gaps. Collective success requires individual ownership.

8. Conclusion:
“A society does not fail only when people do wrong; it can also fail when everyone waits for someone else to do right.”

Useful themes: Individual vs society | Responsibility | Ethics | Good citizenship | Leadership | Collective action | Environmental responsibility | Social apathy | Governance
