The giant banyan tree located in the Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) campus, Munger, has been dated to about 700 years using radiocarbon dating by scientists of the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (Lucknow) and is claimed to be Bihar’s oldest living banyan tree.
Additional points
• Radiocarbon (Carbon-14) dating is used to determine the age of ancient organic remains such as wood, charcoal, bones and fossils.
• Unlike most trees, age determination in banyan trees is difficult because annual growth rings are generally absent or indistinct.
• The tree survives through numerous aerial prop roots, which have developed into secondary trunks, giving it the appearance of a small forest rather than a single tree.

Khet Bachao Abhiyan (1–30 June 2026)
• Khet Bachao Abhiyan is a nationwide month-long campaign (1–30 June 2026) launched to promote balanced fertiliser use, soil health management, natural farming and scientific nutrient management.
• The campaign was nationally launched by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan from Ramsiya village, Raisen district (Madhya Pradesh).
• Core objective: “Save Soil, Reduce Excessive Chemical Fertiliser Use, Improve Farm Sustainability.” The campaign emphasizes soil testing before fertiliser application.
• Soil Health Card (SHC) is a key instrument under the campaign; it provides field-specific recommendations on nutrient and fertiliser requirements.
• The campaign promotes the principle of “Right Fertiliser, Right Quantity, Right Time” for nutrient management.

Google’s “Debug” Mosquito Project
Alphabet (Google’s parent company) has sought approval to release 3.2 crore Wolbachia-infected male mosquitoes in Florida and California to suppress disease-carrying mosquito populations.
Key points:
• Target Species: Aedes aegypti - vector of Dengue, Chikungunya, Zika and Yellow Fever.
• Why only males?
- Male mosquitoes do not bite humans.
- Only female mosquitoes require blood meals for egg development.
• Wolbachia Bacterium:
- Naturally occurring intracellular bacterium found in many insects.
- Not naturally present in Aedes aegypti.
• Working Mechanism:
- Wolbachia-infected male × wild female mosquito
- Eggs fail to hatch (Cytoplasmic Incompatibility)
- Gradual decline in mosquito population.
• Project Type:
- Biological vector-control technique.
- Similar principle to the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT).
• Advantages:
- Species-specific control.
- Reduces dependence on chemical insecticides.
- Wolbachia ≠ Genetic Modification

Zojila Tunnel
• Zojila Tunnel is a 13.15 km-long tunnel being constructed beneath the Zojila Pass on the Srinagar–Leh National Highway (NH-1).
• It will become the world’s longest single-tube bi-directional road tunnel at an altitude of about 11,500 feet.
• The tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Kashmir Valley and Ladakh (especially Kargil region).
• The tunnel is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), a technique particularly suited to fragile Himalayan geology.
• Zojila Pass lies in the Great Himalayan Range and connects Sonamarg (J&K) with Drass–Kargil (Ladakh).
• Zojila Pass is one of the highest motorable passes in India, located on the route between Srinagar and Leh.
