Raja Todar Mal

1. He was one of the Navaratnas (Nine Gems) in the court of Akbar.
2. He is known for introducing the Zabt (land revenue) system & systematic land measurement (survey) reforms in the Mughal Empire.
3. Todar Mal’s revenue reforms were based on the Dahsala System (Ten-Year Settlement), introduced around 1580 CE.
4. The standard unit of land measurement under his reforms was the Bigha, measured using the Jarib (measuring rope/bamboo).

• Raja Todar Mal played a crucial role in bringing Bihar under Mughal control; he participated in the campaign against Daud Khan Karrani, which culminated in the Battle of Rajmahal (1576), leading to the annexation of Bihar and Bengal into the Mughal Empire.

• Akbar personally captured Patna in 1574, after which Todar Mal was sent under Munim Khan for the Bengal–Bihar campaign.

It was done by replacing iron with osmium (Os) and carbon rings with boron-based rings, solving a 70-year-old chemistry challenge.
