First Spring Census in India – Bihar Findings
• India conducted its first nationwide spring census/survey; Bihar also carried out the survey under this initiative.
• Bihar identified 53 natural springs during the survey.
• More than half of the springs were found in Bihar’s Rohtas district.
• District-wise count: Rohtas (29), Munger (16), Jamui (4), Kaimur (3), Nawada (1).
• Springs mainly originate from hill aquifers, rock fissures, groundwater seepage, rivers, streams, and rainwater recharge.
• Several “hanging springs” were identified in Bihar.
• Springs are important for groundwater recharge, sustaining river flow, irrigation, ecology, and local livelihoods.
• Spring mapping also helps in geomorphological studies and scientific water-resource management.
