Despite the fact bihar has become nearly self sufficient in fishery production with record production of8.73 lakh tonne in 2023-2024. There is need to re-look the productivity


The major districts for fisheries production are MADHUBANI > DARBHANGA > WEST CHAMPARAN.

1. Depleting Ground water in Bihar , lowering of water table in Bihar and declining surface water - declining water level in major water bodies in Bihar.

Impacts

A. Agrarian economy - it will hot the starteโ€™s farmers because of crop loss.
B. Water for domestic use - poor and marginal communities will be worst impacted.
C. Loss to fisheries and makhana. Bihar accounts for more than 90% of makhana production in the country and contributes significantly to biharโ€™s economy. Estimated loss of 1200 cr.



2. Bihar Government scheme - har ghar nal se jal where every household is provided 70 lites of water per person per day. PHED department did survey - 37% beneficiaries wasting water

Achivements of the scheme -decline of diseases in quality affected areas like fluoride , arsenic and iron contaminated areas.

Wastage of water - households are using the drinking water for other purposes like cleaning of vehicles and for animals.

Wastage of water in public places is the highest. And also there is wastage in schools andanganwadi centres.
