Did you know reading books can significantly reduce stress levels?
πΊ A University of Sussex study found reading for just 6 minutes can lower stress by up to 68%, more effective than going for a walk or listening to music.
Dr. David Lewis, the cognitive neuropsychologist who led the study, said
The researchers concluded this escape from stressful thoughts reduces muscle tension and heart rate caused by stress.
Dr. David Lewis, the cognitive neuropsychologist who led the study, said
"It really doesn't matter what book you read, by losing yourself in a thoroughly engrossing book you can escape from the worries and stresses of the everyday world and spend a while exploring the domain of the author's imagination."
The researchers concluded this escape from stressful thoughts reduces muscle tension and heart rate caused by stress.

Reading voraciously feeds the mind, but may starve other aspects of life. Like any passion, it requires balance. Too many chapters can mean missed real-life stories, strained eyes, and knowledge without experience.
1. Set reasonable time limits for reading sessions
2. Engage critically with the material, not just passive consumption
3. Mix up activities - reading shouldn't be the only thing on the agenda
4. Remember to move and stretch regularly
5. Discuss books with others β it adds a social element to reading, for that, you can join our discussion group: @offtopicclub

Did you know that 68% of Americans struggle with sleep at least once a week? Scientists have found an unexpected solution: reading before bed. Here's why it works:
1. Stress reduction
A 2009 study at the University of Sussex found that reading can reduce stress levels by up to 68%. This stress reduction helps lower cortisol production, which may facilitate easier sleep onset.
2. Improved sleep onset
Studies have highlighted that unlike electronic devices, reading physical books before bed does not interfere with melatonin production. This helps in establishing a sleep-promoting pre-bed routine.
3. Enhanced sleep quality
Engaging in calming pre-sleep activities, like reading, has been associated with more restful and uninterrupted sleep. Reading can contribute to a more relaxing bedtime routine, which promotes better sleep quality.
For best results, consider establishing a consistent bedtime routine. Aim to read for 20-30 minutes in a quiet, comfortable environment with soft lighting.

Reading opens doors to new worlds and ideas, but when we journey through these pages alone, are we missing out on deeper understanding and joy? Sharing our thoughts with others can enhance our appreciation of books and make the experience even more fulfilling.
Studies have shown the benefits of sharing our reading experiences. Research indicates that people who discuss what theyβve read have a better grasp and retention of the material (Murphy et al., 2009). Additionally, reading and talking about literary fiction can improve our ability to understand othersβ emotions and perspectives (Kidd & Castano, 2013).
Participating in reading groups also leads to increased social connectedness and a sense of community (The Reading Agency, 2015). Shared reading can reduce symptoms of depression and improve overall mental health (Billington et al., 2010).
