#bftp9am - FANS WANTED "UNCLE" CHOO TO GO IN 1976

There were two petitions from disgruntled fans back in December 1976.

One of which was calling Football Association of Singapore (FAS) to sack the then national coach "Uncle" Choo Seng Quee.

I updated this blog post on this occurrence that included the attached image (as credited) with reaction from FAS on the petitions.

THE 12-8 MATCH THAT SHOULDN'T HAPPENED

In August 1977, a National Football League Division OneΒΉ league match between Tampines Rovers SCΒ² and Toa Payoh United turned into what one media outlet called it a "SOCCER FIASCO."

Since the league title had already been decided, the competitive spirit vanished, and the abovementioned game descended into an astonishing 20-goal farce.

THE BREAKING POINT:

Archival reports from that period described scenes that crossed the line from "fun football" into a total collapse of sportsmanship:

▢️ One striker reportedly "literally walked through eight men to put the ball into the net" with zero resistance from the opponents.

▢️ Players were observed "feinting and laughing and joking" while taking turns to score at will.

▢️ Disgruntled fans felt cheated by the display, with one spectator writing: "We wasted our money watching clowns."

It remains one of the jaw-dropping chapters in our local football history β€” a reminder that when the "true spirit" of the game is gone, the scoreline doesn't matter.

So what led to this bizarre incident and how did the league authority react to this "Night of Shame"?

UNPACKING THE CARD ...

I had no idea what I would get when I was about to unpack the "PlayBack" card I picked up recently at Kallang.

HONDA TO FC JURONG: A LONG AWAITED IMPACT FOR SINGAPORE FOOTBALL?

The stunning recruitment of former Japanese international Keisuke Honda by the soon-to-be-renamed FC Jurong (currently Albirex Niigata (Singapore)) has sent shockwaves through the local football fraternity since the announcement made this morning (10/4).

While marquee signings are nothing new since professionalisation began in 1996, what matters most is the impact the former AC Milan star will make come August.

The league’s history is littered with so-called "impact" players who failed to leave a markβ€”such as 1990 Cameroon World Cup veteran Γ‰mile Mbouh, who turned out for Tiong Bahru United in 1997.

Which other "marquees" can you recall who truly left a lasting impression during their time in Singapore?

(πŸ‘€: Shingo Nakano, at the background of the snap, would relish the opportunity to partner with the legend)
