Abstract:
Recently Csabai et al. have found a most likely contaminated metagenomic sample set from Antarctica that contained traces of unique SARS-CoV-2 variants. [.]
With reasonable confidence we could identify genetic material from mitochondria of Homo sapiens, green monkey and Chinese hamster. The latter two most probably originated from cell lines Vero E6 (or COS-7) and CHO respectively, which are frequent laboratory culture media for studying viruses including SARS-CoV-2 and its closest relatives.

Omicron Envelope Mutation T9I
Background:Some weeks ago I was looking for possible explanations why the unusual Envelope Mutation T9I was persistently carried along the B-variants phylogenetic tree-timeline.
Turns out that this odd mutation is also responsible for mild disease progression in Omicron variants:

"This new study suggests that a single mutation (T9I) in the envelope protein of Omicron may be at least partially responsible for it's comparably mild disease progression"

This indicates even more Omicron's lab origin. The Envelope Protein is one of the most conserved regions within the hCoV genome: T9I either appeared thousands of years ago - if not millions - in a wildtype-setting, or it was inserted into a new kind of backbone that is not registered / spotted up2date .
