ISLAND BOAR LORE FACT: 166 years ago..
Due to vague maps at the time, San Juan Island was neglected in the boundary negotiations between the US and UK.
~
June 15 1859, Lyman Cutlar, an American, shot the free-roaming, tuber-munching pig of Charles Griffin, an Irishman.
Cultar's offer of 10 dollars was refuted with a request for tenfold...
Thus began... the 'Pig War' (aka San Juan Boundary Dispute, Northwestern Boundary Dispute, Pig Episode, or Pig and Potato War).
~
Cutlar: "β¦but it was eating my potatoes!"
Griffin: "Rubbish. Itβs up to you to keep your potatoes out of my pig."
~
There were π¬π§threats of arrest and calls for πΊπΈmilitary protection.
The ensuing back-and-forth escalation was logistically drastic and accumulated for over a decade...
πΊπ²461 combatants, 14 cannons
π¬π§2,140 combatants; 5 warships mounting 70 cannons
But, resolution was bloodless. While the border was taking forever to be finetuned,
the military occupations were reduced to no more than 100 men each. And during this time, the small units were amicable, visiting each other's camps to celebrate their respective holidays and holding various athletic competitions. Supposedly, the biggest danger during these years was "the large amounts of alcohol available."
