English Language Professional Development Training Launched
[October 11, 2026 / Bahir Dar, ISC/BiT]
=======================
Bahir Dar Institute of Technology’s English Language Improvement Center (ELIC-BiT), in collaboration with the Ethiopian English Language Professional Association (EELPA) and the British Council, launched a three-month professional development training program.
During the launching ceremony, Dr. Amare Tesfie, Academic Quality Assurance Director of BiT and President of EELPA-Amhara, explained that the training focuses on three thematic areas: teaching English to refugees and displaced learners, inclusive classrooms, and integrating digital technologies.
Dr. Amare appreciated the commitment of ELIC-BiT, EELPA, and the British Council to improving the English language skills of primary, secondary, and tertiary-level students and teachers. He noted that although English has been taught in Ethiopian classrooms for decades, students’ communicative competence remains limited. He emphasized the importance of such training in supporting teachers’ professional development and improving their teaching practices.
Dr. Aysheshim, Dean Delegate of the School of Teacher Education at Bahir Dar University, highlighted the university’s efforts to strengthen the English language skills of primary and secondary school teachers. Similarly, Mr. Fentahun, a delegate from the Bahir Dar City Education Office, appreciated the contributions of Bahir Dar University, EELPA, and the British Council. He emphasized that the shortage of English language professionals remains a major challenge and noted that the training could help improve teachers’ language skills and pedagogical practices.
The training will continue from October 2026 to February 2027 through face-to-face and online sessions, classroom observations, and mentorship activities.
