Various technology innovations developed by researchers and students of Bahir Dar Institute of Technology (BiT) were showcased at an exhibition organized alongside the 3rd Annual Workshop on Community Engagement, University-Industry Linkage, Startup Development, Innovation, and Technology Transfer, hosted by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Community Service of Bahir Dar University.
Among the innovations displayed was a range of small-scale agricultural machinery developed by Mr. Chalachew Emre, Manager and Chief Technical Assistant of Nile Agricultural Manufacturing Engineering. He demonstrated machines designed to address the practical needs of smallholder farmers, including a maize shelling machine capable of processing up to 60 quintals of maize per hour, an animal feed processing machine, a rice milling machine, various DC pumps, and mixers.
Mr. Chalachew explained that the machinery was developed with farmers' purchasing capacity and mobility in mind. He noted that the machines are designed to be affordable and relatively easy to transport from one location to another. He also expressed his appreciation to Bahir Dar University for providing workspace and professional support that enabled him to develop and demonstrate the technologies.
The exhibition also featured an innovative agricultural drone developed by Fitum Amare, a Grade 9 student and member of the BiT Maker Space. The drone is designed to spray agricultural chemicals and was developed to reduce the health risks associated with manual pesticide application.
According to Fitum, farmers often carry pesticide sprayers on their backs when treating their crops, exposing themselves to chemicals that may cause respiratory problems and skin-related health complications. Motivated by these challenges, he developed the drone to provide a safer and more efficient alternative.
The drone has currently reached the prototype stage and has demonstrated its flight and spraying capabilities. Fitum said that with support and collaboration from investors and other stakeholders, he believes the innovation can be further developed and brought into practical use to help address challenges faced by farmers.
In addition to these innovations, numerous other technology-based projects were presented during the exhibition, highlighting the research, innovation, and entrepreneurial potential of BiT students and researchers.
The exhibition was attended by Dr. Abate Getahun, Director General of the Amhara Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Fund (ARRF); Dr. Mengesha Ayene, President of Bahir Dar University; Professor Eneyew Adgo, Vice President for Research and Community Engagement of Bahir Dar University; senior university officials; academics and researchers; and invited stakeholders.
The exhibition provided a platform for innovators to demonstrate practical technological solutions and strengthened opportunities for collaboration among the university, industry, investors, and other stakeholders in advancing innovation and technology transfer.
