Faculty of Chemical and Food Engineering at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology-Bahir Dar University, Reviews 2018 Performance and 2019 Plan
[October 5, 2026 / Bahir Dar, ISC/BiT]
=======================
Bahir Dar Institute of Technology (BiT), Bahir Dar University, conducted a review and discussion forum on the 2018 performance report and 2019 plan of the Faculty of Chemical and Food Engineering (FCFE), bringing together faculty leaders, academic staff, and relevant stakeholders.

The program was officially opened with a welcoming address by Dr. Amare Kassaw, Deputy Scientific Director for Academic Affairs at BiT. In his opening remarks, Dr. Amare emphasized the growing institutional focus on Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and underscored the importance of actively engaging faculty deans, instructors, institutional leaders, and stakeholders in reviewing and validating academic programs.
He noted that such collaborative engagements are essential to ensuring that academic programs respond effectively to contemporary educational demands and produce graduates equipped with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required by society and the world of work.
The overall report and plan of the Faculty of Chemical and Food Engineering were presented by Prof. Solomon Workneh, Dean of the Faculty. The presentation provided an overview of the faculty's major activities, achievements, challenges, priorities, areas requiring attention, and its readiness for university autonomy for the upcoming academic year.
The report indicated that the Faculty made significant achievements in teaching, research, community service, and industry engagement during the year. Its Chemical Engineering program received ABET accreditation, while the accreditation process for the Food Engineering and Human Nutrition programs was at its final stage.
In the area of research, the Faculty secured eight research projects, mobilizing about 25.6 million Birr. Community service and engagement projects generated approximately 4.4 million Birr, while laboratory services and training programs also contributed additional income.
The Faculty also recorded notable achievements in academic quality. All programs achieved a 100 percent exit examination pass rate. In addition, 96 publications were reported, 20 seminars were conducted, and seven PhD students graduated.
The report identified several areas requiring further attention, including multidisciplinary collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship, laboratory capacity and utilization, postgraduate program quality and supervision, and the integration of research, teaching, and industry.
Regarding readiness for university autonomy, the Faculty conducted a self-assessment across nine dimensions. The assessment identified areas requiring further improvement, including academic programs and curriculum, income generation, research and innovation, quality assurance and accreditation, student services and employability, and digital transformation and data management.
Sector-specific presentations were subsequently delivered by the respective academic leaders. Dr. Admasu Fanta, Chair Holder of Food Safety and Quality, presented the report and plan of the Food Engineering area. Dr. Tesfaye Alamirew, Chair Holder of Biochemical Engineering, presented the report and plan of the Chemical Engineering area, while Mr. Girma Nega, Chair Holder of Human Nutrition, presented the report and plan of Human Nutrition.
Following the presentations, an extensive discussion was held with academic staff on the reported performance, planned activities, challenges, and areas requiring further improvement. Participants raised questions and provided constructive comments aimed at strengthening the implementation of the faculty's plans and improving academic performance.
The presenters subsequently provided responses and clarifications to the questions and comments raised by participants.
The discussion forms part of BiT's broader efforts to strengthen Outcome-Based Education (OBE), enhance the quality and relevance of academic programs, and ensure meaningful participation of faculty members, academic leaders, and stakeholders in curriculum review and validation.
Through such engagements, Bahir Dar Institute of Technology continues to work toward developing responsive, innovative, technology-oriented, and future-ready academic programs that address the needs of students, industry, and society.
