PhD Dissertation Public Defense Held at BiT–BDU
[ October 01, 2026 | Bahir Dar, ISC/BiT]
=======================
Mr. Abdulkerim Ali Omer, a PhD candidate from the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Bahir Dar Institute of Technology (BiT), Bahir Dar University, has successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in a public defense held at the Bahir Dar Institute of Technology.
The dissertation, entitled “Study and Design of PSO-Optimized FL-Based PID Controller for Coordinated GC and AVR in Multi-Area Interconnected Power System,” focuses on the study, design, and optimization of advanced control techniques for improving the performance and stability of interconnected power systems.
The research explores the application of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Fuzzy Logic (FL)-based PID control to coordinate Governor Control (GC) and Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) in multi-area interconnected power systems. The study addresses challenges associated with maintaining reliable and stable operation of interconnected electrical power networks.
The dissertation was supervised by Dr. Getachew Biru (Associate Professor) of the University of Rwanda, Rwanda. Dr. Belachew Bantyirga (Associate Professor) of Bahir Dar University served as co-supervisor.
The Student Dissertation Advisory Committee (SDAC) included Dr. Mezgebu Getnet (Associate Professor) of Bahir Dar University.
During the public defense, examiners and members of the academic community raised questions and provided constructive comments concerning the research methodology, theoretical foundations, and findings of the study. Mr. Abdulkerim responded to the questions and comments with clear, well-structured, and scientifically grounded explanations, demonstrating a strong understanding of his research area.
The successful defense marks an important academic milestone for Mr. Abdulkerim Ali Omer and contributes to ongoing research in advanced control systems and interconnected power-system operation.
The Bahir Dar Institute of Technology extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Abdulkerim Ali Omer on his successful PhD dissertation defense and achievement of this significant academic milestone.
