Bahir Dar Institute of Technology Held Third Round Startup Graduation

Bahir Dar Institute of Technology (BiT), through its Business Incubation and Techno-Entrepreneurship Center (BiTeC), has celebrated the graduation of ten innovative startup teams in its third round of incubation. The ceremony was held in the presence of university officials, representatives from the Ministry of Education, government and non-government organizations, partners, and invited guests.
BiTeC Director, Mr. Hailemariam Mulugeta, noted that in the previous two rounds eight startups had graduated, while this third round saw ten teams successfully complete the program. He emphasized that earlier graduates have already established their own companies, creating job opportunities for many, and expressed confidence that the new graduates will make significant contributions to the nation.
Dr. Muluken Zegeye, Deputy Scientific Director for Research and Technology Transfer, welcomed the graduates and highlighted that although the number of participants is small, their impact is substantial. He stressed that graduates of the startup program are not job seekers but job creators, as proven by the experience of previous cohorts.
Dr. Amare Kasaw, Deputy Scientific Director for Academic Affairs, delivered the opening remarks, thanking the guests for their participation and congratulating the graduates. He assured attendees that with collaboration from partners, the graduates will be able to launch impactful projects.
During the ceremony, the graduating startups presented their innovative projects to participants, who expressed admiration and encouragement. At the conclusion, the graduates received certificates from distinguished guests and university officials.

The delegation led by the President of Bahir Dar University (BDU) held a highly productive and strategic discussion with the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission (ENEC) aimed at establishing a strong foundation for long-term collaboration in nuclear science, technology, and innovation. The discussions focused on key areas of mutual interest, including workforce development, research and innovation, policy and strategy development, and international partnership and collaboration.
The Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission and Bahir Dar University engaged in high-level consultations to establish a comprehensive collaborative framework that will support the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology in Ethiopia. The meeting was held at the Commission’s headquarters and was chaired by the Commissioner of the Commission, Honorable Ato Sandokan Debebe, together with the senior leadership of Bahir Dar University.
During the discussions, both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the peaceful utilization of nuclear science and technology in alignment with Ethiopia’s National Nuclear Policy and the guidelines and standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The partnership seeks to strengthen national capacity and contribute to Ethiopia’s socio-economic transformation through responsible and innovative applications of nuclear technologies.
The dialogue identified several strategic areas of cooperation, including human resource development and workforce capacity building, curriculum design and academic program development, joint research and innovation initiatives, technology transfer, and practical training opportunities. Particular emphasis was placed on developing a highly skilled workforce capable of supporting the country’s emerging nuclear science and technology ecosystem.
Furthermore, the two institutions agreed to work closely in facilitating international education and training opportunities, including scholarships, fellowships, academic exchanges, and specialized professional training programs for students, researchers, and faculty members. These initiatives are expected to enhance national expertise and create a new generation of qualified professionals in nuclear science and related disciplines.
Recognizing the critical role of nuclear science and technology in national development, energy security, healthcare, agriculture, water resources management, industrial productivity, and environmental sustainability, the leadership of both institutions expressed their strong commitment to translating the outcomes of the discussions into actionable programs and sustainable partnerships. The meeting concluded with a shared vision to establish a robust and impactful collaboration that will contribute significantly to Ethiopia’s scientific advancement, technological innovation, and long-term development aspirations.
