Career Week at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology Empowers Students with Job Readiness and Networking Skills

Bahir Dar Institute of Technology (BiT) recently Held a dynamic Career Week session designed to equip students and staff with the skills necessary to thrive in today’s competitive labor market. The program emphasized job readiness, personal branding, networking, and an understanding of current labor market trends.
Dr. Amare Tesfaye, Director of the Total Quality Management Office, highlighted the session’s objectives and underscored the importance of maintaining quality standards in academic and innovation-driven activities.
Opening the event, Dr. Amare Kassaw, Deputy Scientific Director for Academic Affairs, reflected on the Institute’s contributions to science, technology, and innovation over the years, noting its continuous efforts to produce graduates who are competitive, employable, and entrepreneurial.
“The goal is not just academic excellence, but also practical competencies that align with industry demands,”
Dr. Amare Kassaw said, acknowledging the role of instructors and researchers like Mr Habtamu Alemayehu, whose dedication has significantly contributed to the Institute’s educational mission.
Organized by the BiT Career Development Center (BiT-CDC) in partnership with Mohas Consult and Mohas Jobs, the Career Week session focused on “Labor Market Information, Job Readiness, Self-Branding, and the Art of Networking.”
The event featured Habtamu Alemayehu, a former BiT-CDC coordinator and workforce development trainer, who guided participants on understanding labor market trends, developing in-demand skills, and effectively preparing for job interviews.
Attendees also learned strategies for building strong personal brands and leveraging networking opportunities to enhance career prospects. Organizers emphasized that such initiatives help bridge the gap between academic training and industry expectations, encouraging active engagement in professional development programs.
Participants described the session as insightful and practical, praising the opportunity to gain real-world career guidance from experienced professionals. The Career Week program continues to strengthen BiT’s commitment to student employability, research, entrepreneurship, and innovation, reinforcing its role as a leader in higher education and workforce preparation.

We are excited to announce the launch of Catalyze Tech 2.0, an initiative designed to support and scale locally driven innovations addressing real-life challenges across Ethiopia.

Catalyze Tech, a joint initiative by One Million Birtu and Global SDG7 Hubs, focuses on empowering enterprises that are developing productive-use energy (PUE) solutions, particularly leveraging solar and decentralized renewable technologies. The program aims to tackle key barriers faced by smallholder farmers and micro and small enterprises (MSEs), including limited energy access, high technology costs, and lack of locally adapted solutions.

Building on the success of its first cohort, Catalyze Tech 2.0 is now seeking innovative prototype designs and early-stage products that can improve productivity, increase income, and strengthen local economies. Selected innovators will receive incubation support, including:

Up to 800,000 ETB cost-sharing funding
Technical and business development support
Access to experts, partnerships, and piloting opportunities

Debate and Public Speaking Competition Successfully Conducted at BiT

The first round of the Debate and Public Speaking Competition, organized by the English Language Improvement Center at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology (ELIC-BiT) in collaboration with the Academic Quality Assurance and Enhancement Office, was successfully conducted on Saturday.
The program began with an opening speech delivered by Dr. Amare Tesfie, the former ELIC Coordinator and current Director of the Academic Quality Assurance and Enhancement Office, who highlighted the importance of English for international communication, as well as critical thinking and student engagement in academic environments.
A total of 15 competitors participated in the first round, including 8 debaters and 7 public speakers.
At the end of the round, 6 debate participants and 5 public speaking participants were selected to advance to the second and final round based on their performance. The evaluation was conducted using criteria such as self-confidence, grammatical accuracy, stage presence, fluency, time management, and argumentation.
The second and final round of the competition will be held in the near future, where finalists will compete for top positions, and the winners will be officially recognized and awarded.
The event successfully achieved its objective of promoting critical thinking, English communication skills, and innovation among students, and it was well received by both participants and attendees.
