Nuclear Energy Emerges as Key Solution to Ethiopia’s Growing Power Demand, Expert Says

A motivational speech delivered at Bahir Dar University Institute of Technology has underscored the growing importance of nuclear energy as a key solution to Ethiopia’s increasing energy demands.
Dr. Tilahun Tesfaye, Associate Professor of Nuclear Physics at Addis Ababa University, presented a talk titled “Role of Higher Learning Institutions in a Country’s Nuclear Program” to faculty members and students. During his address, he emphasized that nuclear energy stands out as a superior energy source compared to conventional alternatives.
Dr. Tilahun pointed to the rapid rise in global energy demand and the limitations of traditional energy sources as key reasons driving the need for nuclear energy adoption. He highlighted that Ethiopia’s current electricity consumption stands at approximately 120 kWh per capita annually, significantly lower than the African average of about 600 kWh.
According to him, this gap reflects the country’s limited energy capacity, which could hinder industrial growth. He noted that the existing power supply may not be sufficient to support large-scale industries operating at full capacity if more investments are made in the sector.
The speaker stressed that diversifying energy sources—including nuclear power—is essential for Ethiopia to meet its future energy needs and sustain economic development. He also called on higher education institutions to play a leading role in advancing research, training skilled professionals, and supporting the development of a national nuclear program.
The session concluded with discussions on how universities can contribute to building technical expertise and shaping policies that enable safe and effective use of nuclear technology in Ethiopia.
