Bahir Dar Institute of Technology and Ministry of Agriculture Held Consultations on Capacity Building

A delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture (Ethiopia) held consultative discussions with scholars and researchers from Bahir Dar University to explore areas of collaboration aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and enhancing professional development.
The discussions, hosted at the Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, focused on joint research initiatives, technology transfer, and capacity-building programs designed to improve the skills of ministry staff and promote innovation in the agricultural sector.
During the session, the Institute’s Deputy Scientific Director for Academic Affairs, Dr. Amare Kasew, provided a comprehensive briefing on the institution’s research capabilities, laboratory facilities, and hands-on training programs. He emphasized that the Institute possesses the necessary expertise and infrastructure to effectively collaborate with the Ministry in advancing agricultural technology and research-based solutions.
Beyond the discussions, the Ministry’s delegation toured various laboratories and workshops within the Institute to observe ongoing research and practical training activities.
At the conclusion of the visit, representatives of the Ministry, including W/ro Marta, expressed their interest in establishing a sustainable partnership with the Institute. They noted that closer cooperation between the two institutions would play a vital role in promoting technological advancement, strengthening human resource capacity, and supporting evidence-based agricultural development in Ethiopia.
The meeting is expected to pave the way for formal agreements and future joint initiatives between the Ministry and the Institute.

The Institute of Technology at Bahir Dar University, in collaboration with the Ministry of Innovation and Technology (Ethiopia), conducted a half-day workshop focusing on Ethiopia’s Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Policy, Digital Strategy 2030, and the Startup Proclamation.
Opening the workshop, the Institute’s Deputy Scientific Director for Academic Affairs, Dr. Amare Kassaw, noted that the Institute is actively engaged in a wide range of technological initiatives. He emphasized that hosting discussions on key national policies related to science, technology and innovation aligns with the Institute’s mission and ongoing activities.
During the session, Policy and Strategy Research Analyst Dr. Abebe Molla presented the objectives, strategic directions and implementation frameworks of Ethiopia’s STI Policy. He explained that the policy encompasses eight major strategic pillars: human resource development; technology development and transfer; knowledge management; research and development; innovation and enterprise competitiveness; financial provision, investment and incentives; intellectual property collaboration and linkages; and environmental, social and cultural development. He further underlined that higher education institutions are expected to play a leading role, particularly in human capital development and technology transfer.
Head of Startup Development Tadesse Anbese briefed participants on the Startup Proclamation, stating that the legal framework is designed to facilitate financial and technical support for emerging startups and to strengthen the innovation ecosystem.
In addition, E-Commerce Project Manager Abel Solomon presented Digital Strategy 2030, noting that it builds on the achievements and lessons learned from Digital Strategy 2025. He stressed that universities should work closely with local city administrations to ensure the effective implementation of the strategy.
Participants drawn from various universities engaged in discussions, raising questions and providing feedback on the policies and strategies. Presenters responded with clarifications, highlighting the importance of coordinated institutional efforts to advance Ethiopia’s digital transformation and innovation agenda.
