Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Held its Annual Workshop

The Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology (BiT) held its annual workshop in the Jan Moskov Library Hall under the theme “Technology Commercialization: Catalyzing Innovation and Entrepreneurship Ecosystem in Ethiopia.” The event was distinguished by the presence of Engineer Bejai Naiker, a successful entrepreneur and owner of several companies, who shared his insights on idea generation, innovation, and wealth creation. Scholars, students, and invited guests from academia and the industry attended the workshop, which also featured keynote speeches and presentations on translating research into practical value and driving growth through innovation.

Dr. Bereket Haile, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, welcomed participants and invited guests to the workshop, emphasizing the critical role of fostering innovation and entrepreneurship through close collaboration between academia and industry. The opening speech was then delivered by Dr. Muluken Zegeye, Deputy Scientific Director for Research and Technology Transfer BiT, He highlighted the institute’s ongoing commitment to strengthening university-industry linkages through the regular hosting of international and annual conferences. He also expressed his sincere gratitude to all partners actively involved in initiatives aimed at advancing sectoral development and supporting collaborative efforts between the institute and industry.

The workshop featured by three distinguished speakers, Engineer Bejai Naiker, a successful entrepreneur and owner of multiple companies, on the topic “Idea Generation, Innovation and Wealth Creation through Fabrication Engineering Business.” he stressed that idea generation is the essential first step for wealth creation and innovation, urging the audience to move beyond viewing support for new ideas as mere aid. He highlighted the critical role of creativity and practical innovation in driving entrepreneurship and generating economic value in Ethiopia, inspiring attendees to focus on transforming ideas into viable business opportunities.

Dr. Sisay Geremew delivered the keynote address on “Translating Knowledge into Value: New Horizons for Research Commercialization at BDU,” where he emphasized the importance of transforming academic research into practical and marketable solutions that can contribute to societal and economic development. Following him, Dr. Shimeles Tilahun presented on “Driving Growth through Innovation and Business Development,” highlighting effective strategies for fostering innovation-led growth and illustrating how academic institutions and businesses can collaborate to create sustainable development opportunities.

The workshop concluded with a panel discussion, a tour showcasing completed projects, and the presentation of certificates of recognition to individuals and organizations that significantly contributed to the success of the event.
