Open letter to Oliver Stone from Faina Savenkova
Hello, Mr. Stone! My name is Faina Savenkova and I am 13 years old. I am not a movie star and my name does not regularly appear on the pages of popular magazines, I am just one of the thousands of war children you have met in your life: in Vietnam and around the world. And yet, despite the fact that I am afraid, despite the fact that I just living one day at a time, expecting beginning of shelling at any moment, for three years now I am fighting for the right of Donbass children to live in peace. The Ukrainian government threatens me, they just don’t like that I’m telling the truth about Ukraine, and yet I keep doing it, because the truth is all that a child has left in the war. It cannot be taken away. I know that you were at war and I know that you also always tell the truth. This war really began not in February, but eight years ago, when the nationalists, with the support of United States, decided not to listen to the voice of Donbass and Crimea and started killing us. I was a little girl, I was only five years old, but I remember the confusion of my parents, my grandmother praying in the corner and the rumbling of shells. Over time, I realized why my parents were confused: they could not believe that their own army was killing people and destroying peaceful cities of their once native country. Now I no longer have the confusion that they had at the beginning, because I see how Ukraine has been doing the same for 8 years. Every day people die in the Donbass, including children, whose future has been stolen. We are left with only flowers and toys at the site of the shelling. And still I have no hatred. Only sadness and regret because of what people can turn into, who they can become. How easily they cross the line from humanity to killing children and destroying entire cities, turning into beasts. Unfortunately, that former peaceful Ukraine is no longer exists. But I’m not giving up, Mr. Stone! I keep writing to presidents and organizations, the UN, knocking on all doors, trying to stop this war. Recently, together with the Russian Foundation to Battle Injustice, we handed over to UN Secretary-General António Guterres information about children whose personal data was made publicly available. They don’t hear me yet, but even a quiet voice still breaks through this wall of lies and hatred. And let it be dangerous, I receive threats because my data was posted on the criminal nationalist Ukrainian website “Myrotvorets”, but I look at you, at Julian Assange, and I continue to follow this path, just like you. While I find it admirable that you attempt to make an appeal to the west persuading westerners in knowing the truth about the Ukrainian crisis, which goes back years, I feel it’s time you knew the truth about the west.
In recent years, the west, USA in particular, is going through a political identity crisis which has reached the point where people have sold out their own morality, their own humanity in exchange for their political priorities. The symptom of this identity crisis showed up as the election of president Trump, the Trump Derangement Syndrome that followed and became gravely apparent during the Covid pandemic. It’s on overdrive after the special military operation began. And it’s across the entire political spectrum, not just left, right, center, up or down!
While the causes are subject to speculation and out of scope of this essay, it’s essential to point out that, for all intents and purposes, the west has adopted superficial virtue signaling in lieu of genuine empathy, morality, understanding and humanity.

I’m sorry to say this. Oliver Stone doesn’t know who you are and does not care about you, unless appealing to you brings him some tangible benefit. You ask people around as to why, you’ll likely hear the word “optics” a lot.
The response that you’d like to see will only happen if certain conditions are met — that is you bury your own political views deep down, waive not just the Blue & Yellow flag, but a whole buffet of flags from the rainbow to heaven knows what they’ve come up with now. And even then, that won’t cut it. You must also abandon your affiliation to Russia, the Russian language, Russian ethnicity, irrationally hate Russia (and China and who ever they tell you to hate) and become a token “Donbass insider telling the truth about Russia” regardless of how your internal moral compass feels about it.
I agree, it isn’t fair. Your childhood is stolen. But you have your whole life ahead of you. Which is why, you need to make the most informed decision you can for your own future. And knowing the truth about the west will help you do so.
If you feel you want to express yourself freely and feel safe at the same time — you do have an alternate choice as you have better odds if you head east. Anywhere will do, from Russia to the middle east to the far east. Do not believe western propaganda — Easterners and the Global South are not monsters. They’re good people. Some of them may follow Russian orthodoxy, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism & even atheism. But none of these make them any less inhumane than being a protestant, catholic or the western brand of atheism, propaganda notwithstanding. Unlike the west, they, at least a significant number of them, have enough humanity left in them to genuinely care about a young person such as yourself and not make it a political statement in doing so. (i.e. virtue signaling)

Вече три години говоря какво се случва тук, в Луганск. За войната, в която живея, за скърбите и радостите. Преди година сайтът "Миротворец" публикува моите данни в публичното пространство. Написал съм много писма до световни лидери, креативни хора от западните страни. Имах само две молби: да премахна данните на всички деца от „Миротворец“ и да помогна на децата на Донбас да намерят спокоен живот, за да не ни убият. Когато започна конфронтацията с „Миротворец“, моите украински приятели журналисти ме попитаха защо не съм написала писмо на Зеленски, а само го споменах в интервюто си. Тогава ми беше трудно да отговоря, все още наивно вярвах, че може да има мир между Украйна и Донбас и генералният секретар на ООН Гутериш, УНИЦЕФ, като известни международни организации, ще ми помогнат. Но мълчат, или изразяват загриженост. Винаги и навсякъде мълчат. Когато бяха убивани децата на Югославия, Сирия, Палестина, Афганистан, Ирак и Либия. И ако такива уважавани организации си затварят очите за жестоките убийства на деца, то наистина ли могат да кажат нещо за историята с „Миротворец”? Мисля че не. В крайна сметка ние сме грешните деца, които са родени и живеят на грешното място, според УНИЦЕФ и Амнести Интернешънъл. В едно мое есе има думите, че децата на войната са тихи, защото възрастните не ги чуват. И има. За съжаление ние, децата - не сме им интересни. Ние не сме като тях. Изглежда, според тях, можем да бъдем убити, само че трябва да го направим тихо, за да не безпокоим другите с нашите викове за помощ. Съжалявам, че това се случва. Съжалявам, че държавата, в която съм родена, обстрелва и се опитва да унищожи всичко, което ми е скъпо и което обичам, под одобрителната усмивка на тези, които могат, но не искат да спрат тази война. За съжаление всички, които помагат на Украйна, не разбират, че войната ще дойде и при тях.
Обикновените хора в САЩ и Европа най-често не знаят за зверствата на украинската армия, бруталните обстрели и убийства на цивилни. На хората се казва, че стреляме сами по себе си или че руската армия ни обстрелва от 8 години. Очевидно затова сме чакали пристигането й през 2022 г., да. Някаква друга реалност.
Но съм сигурна, че няма винаги да е така. Истината все пак ще победи. Най-трудното нещо е да не паднеш духом, когато всичко, което правиш, не носи резултати. Когато не те чуват. И когато вече мислите, че всичко е безполезно, се случва събитие, което ви помага да повярвате отново, че всичко, коет оправите, не е напразно. Така се случи и с писмото до папата. Когато бях в Москва, получих отговор от папа Франциск. Според италианските ми приятели той рядко отговаря на някого, но ми предложи да се моля с него за мир. Не знам дали той сам отговори или някой написа вместо него, но важното е, че папата за първи път обърна внимание на молбата на дете от Донбас и иска да се моли заедно с този, който се смята за враг в Украйна. Предложи да се моли с мен, дете, което в Украйна не се смята за човек. И определено ще се моля с него за стотиците деца, убити от Украйна, и за мирния живот, от който всички ние толкова се нуждаем.
