‘Going bananas: the global fungal attack on bananas’. Our second speaker at the 23 September free ‘Life threatening Fungi’ public symposium is Gert Kema, Professor of tropical Phytopathology, Department of Plant Sciences, Wageningen University.
He has 37 years of experience in plant pathology, particularly on cereal foliar blights. His research focus is on host and pathogen genetics and genomics, currently specializing on foliar and vascular diseases of tropical perennial crops, primarily banana and coffee. He published over 115 peer reviewed scientific articles and has editorial responsibilities for the Frontiers in Plant Science and PLOS One as well as of the PLOS Channel Crops. He is a co-founder of three companies in the field of bioprocessing and protection/genetic improvement of banana.

سخنران اول، به بررسی قارچهای پاتوژن در دوزیستان میپردازد.
سخنران دوم سمپوزیوم به موضوع قارچهای پاتوژن گیاهی میپردازد.
Prof. Cornelia Lass-Flörl, Medical University of Innsbrück, Austria is our third speaker at the 23 September symposium. The title of her lecture is ‘Unsolved: Public health challenges in fungal infections’.
She is going to talk about the growing health hazard of fungi. We are getting older and the older we get, the less well the immune system functions, hence, the risk of getting infected by fungi, increases.
New cancer treatments have a drawback on the immune system and make people more vulnerable to fungal infections. Organ transplants demand immune suppressors, a chance for fungi to take over. Some genetically engineered drugs interfere with our immune system.
Another growing threat comes from new aggressive viruses.
Finally, she will discuss the difficulty of diagnostics and treatment and possible ways of dealing with these challenges.
