Monument to the letter “ё” in Ulyanovsk, Russia

Monument to the letter “ё” /jo/ can be found in the city of Ulyanovsk, Russia. The monument reflects the first appearance of this letter, written by the hand of Nikolay Karamzin.

Quite snowy, isnʼt it?

As the Russian language developed, the sound /jo/ began to appear more and more often in speech, but there were no strict rules in writing. Then, in 1783, Princess Ekaterina Dashkova proposed using the digraph “iô”. The proposal was approved by the Academy of Sciences. However, not everyone agreed with this innovation. Short time passed and in 1797, Nikolay Karamzin, the famous Russian historian and poet, began to use his own letter — “ё”. The first word with this letter was “слёзы” (tears). Through many constraints, the letter survived until now. Thus, Karamzin can be considered the father of this letter. The monument was erected right in his homeland.

Even today, the position of the letter remains precarious: in writing the letter is often used without dots (as “е”). This leads to double interpretation of words and difficulties for foreigners in learning the Russian language. We strongly recommend using the letter to avoid shedding “слёзы” (many tears) or “слезы” (one tear, Genitive case). 😉

В городе Ульяновске можно встретить интересный памятник, посвящённый букве «ё». Он отражает то, как в действительности выглядела первая написанная буква «ё» рукой Николая Карамзина.

(Было так снежно на момент фотографирования, что пришлось откапывать.)

По мере развития русского языка звук [йо] стал всё чаще появляться в речи, но на письме строгих правил к нему не предъявлялось. В 1783 году, княгиня Екатерина Дашкова предложила использовать диграф «iô». Предложение было одобрено Академией наук, однако не все согласились с таким нововведением. Прошло немного времени, и в 1797 году Николай Карамзин, известный русский историк и поэт, начал использовать собственную букву — «ё». Первое слово, содержащее новую букву было «слёзы». 😭 Несмотря на множество ограничений, карамзинское написание буквы дошло до наших дней. Не зря памятник установлен на его родной земле: городе, носившем в его времена название Синбирск/Симбирск.

Несмотря на то, что буква «ё» выжила, её положение всё ещё остаётся неопределённым, так как в письменном виде буква часто употребляется без точек. Это безусловно приводит к двойному толкованию слов и трудностям для иностранцев в изучении русского языка. Мы настоятельно рекомендуем использовать букву, чтобы от недопонимания не пролить «слёзы» (или «слезы»?). 😉
Во всех русскоязычных текстах на сайте Bilinguator.com мы принципиально расставляем точки над «ё» при помощи небольшого инструмента, который мы назвали Ёditor.

Born in Tehran, lived in India, committed suicide in France. The philosophical drama “The Tragedy of Man” by Hungarian writer Imre Madách explores the eternal themes of human existence and the search for the meaning of life. The main character, Adam, goes through various historical eras under the guidance of the fallen angel Lucifer. Along the way, Adam repeatedly meets people who are overcome by new kinds of passions that do not and can never end. Such a broad view of the empty vanity of people plunges the main character (and perhaps the reader?) into despair.
