Joan La Barbara (b. 1947) is a legendary figure in avant-garde music. Her most famous “accidental” audience, however, was millions of children watching Sesame Street in the late 70s and 80s. In the cult-classic “Signing Alphabet” segment, a floating hand formed American Sign Language letters while La Barbara provided a haunting, improvised soundtrack of vocal clicks, hisses, and echoes.
