Of course but as a starter let me clarify that I said vertical scaling is more expensive than horizontal.

So vertical scaling is basically adding RAM or CPU to an existing server. In order to accomplish that the server in itself must be high end. If the server is average or low end even if you add RAM or CPU the materials of the server will not be compatible with the newly added components.

But when you scale it horizontally, you’re basically adding servers. When you add servers, you can just add average servers and the output can highly optimised by the algorithms you use in your servers plus to load balance the incoming requests as well as the geographical proximity of the servers.

The cost of high end servers is way more expensive than few average servers combined making vertical scaling more expensive than horizontal.
