Reflections on collective action and movement from a member of Besetzung gegen Besatzung
1. FIGHT TO WIN
Don't aim to negotiate a deal, aim to force accountability. Don't aim to slow down police response, aim to stop it. If we don't try, we have already lost.
2. DON'T WAIT TO BE LEAD - BECOME A LEADER
We cannot wait for one magical entity to guide us to the perfect method of liberation. If you think of something you want to be done, do it. We will not ask permission, not from the authorities and not from each other.
3. MOVE SWIFTLY, STEADILY, AND WITH A GOAL IN MIND
We can achieve the unimaginable with deliberate action. There are times for ideological debates and there are times for action. Learn to differentiate them.
4. DON'T LET FEAR HAMPER YOU
Fear and paranoia are tools of state suppression. We know that we act for justice and liberation, and we must build a strong and broad movement. Fear and overemphasized concern for security cannot lead us to exclude newcomers, censor speech, and stay frozen in inaction.
5. MASK UP
Even if you think you don't need to protect your own identity or health, someone else might. We stay safer together.
6. DON'T DISAWOV RADICAL ACTION
The powers that be have proven over and over again that they will not listen to us if we do not force them. Spaces that defend themselves - through barricades, barriers, or even simple human chains - are SAFER than those who don't. Don't stop people from defending spaces from the police.
7. REFUSE TO POLICE
Maybe someone is doing something you personally disagree with - that does not mean they deserve to be subjected to violence. Throw away the idea of respectable action. There is no one tool to liberation - we need the whole damn kit.
8. LEAVE YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR
We are many, with different backgrounds and needs. We might disagree on methods and strategy, but never take disagreement personally. Conflict is not abuse. Liberate yourself from your ego.
9. DON'T FILM YOUR COMRADES - HELP THEM
When someone is attacked, many pull out their phones. But what if instead of filming our comrades, we would help them?
Additionally, video evidence, especially on social media, is used to incriminate protesters. Don't help the police.
