International architecture and engineering practice TAEP/AAP has extended the Al Hamra Tower in Kuwait City’s Central Business District with the Red Dot, a multifunctional space that establishes a prominent monolithic landmark and contributes to the cityscape. The key visual and structural element of the intervention is the West Valet Canopy, which defines the primary entrance to the shopping center. The canopy is created using Lamella-style engineered formwork and polystyrene for weight reduction and finished with the iconic Hamra Red.

BE OPEN congratulates the first three winners of Design Your Climate Action: international competition for young creatives focused on the United Nations’ SDG#13.

The Third Prize of €2,000 goes to Emilia Ziolek, a Product Design and Technology student from University of Limerick, Ireland, for the Tidal Energy Turbine Form Redesign with Biomimicry concept. It is the first step to a new design of bladeless turbines with hydrofoils. Their streamlined design reduces the impact on marine life by eliminating rotating blades and enhances efficiency in energy conversion. Emilia suggests that hydrofoils operate by harnessing lift generated from water flow, allowing them to capture energy with reduced drag and increased effectiveness.

The Second Prize of €3,000 goes to Granny Mmantho Lesiamang and the Clauseph BioFuels startup in Botswana, for the Clean Cooking Project. Its focus is on designing, manufacturing and distributing low-cost, energy-efficient biomass stoves that can reduce biomass fuel consumption, lower the smoke inhalation and carbon emissions. The project also includes developing clean solid biomass fuel with wood derived from invasive bush trees, rampant across Botswana’s farmlands.

Developed by BillerudKorsnäs and Syntegon as a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic packaging in industries like beauty and personal care and confectionery, Pearl is a paper pod packing solution with a premium aesthetic inspired by the shapes of the sea. What makes it special are the 3D-properties enabled by the FibreForm paper (patented by BillerudKorsnäs) and manufacturing technology. The material is processed on machinery from Bosch Packaging Technology, who not only contributes long-standing expertise in forming, filling and sealing of a wide variety of materials but also ensures the subsequent industrialization of the newly developed technologies for commercial production. The result is unique tactile experiences and embossed shapes of the paper shell.

To shut off the Hammer alarm clock, you must grab it and slam it down on the rubberized base. In such a way, Spanish designer Jorge Ros Gisbert wanted to create a way for people to wake up feeling strong and empowered each morning. Unlike most of contemporary alarm clocks that are focused on versatility and feature numerous functions, the Hammer is designed around a simple action that helps you liberate energy and start the day with determination.

With the exponent growth of e-commerce, over 100 billion deliveries happen each year, the single-use packaging material ending up in landfills. Designer Simon Chantrel has addressed the problem of constantly growing amount of plastic packaging with Inflate, a flexible and reusable package. Made from recyclable canvas or polyethylene, it can be inflated to the size of the item, and after use – deflated and rolled back to be reused later.

Designer Lei Yang has conceptualized a solar power solution that offers unparalleled portability. The Energy Tape comprises a roll of reusable tape of solar cells. The designer claims that its reusable adhesive back can cling to canvas, glass and almost any other surface without needing to lay entirely flat. This means it can be unrolled and stuck literally anywhere, e.g. window sills, or a backpack, thus turning any place into a small power plant that can generate enough energy to charge a smartphone or a power bank.

This playful milk packaging design by Milan-based designer Muhammet Uzuntas pays homage to cows. The bottle is shaped like a cow's udder, which is not only cute but is also ergonomic, for four little teats give it more stability.

Japanese studio Nendo has surrounded a triangular home situated along the road in Japan's Nagano Prefecture with 3m-high screens of concrete panels arranged in a gradient-like pattern to secure privacy from passing traffic and pedestrians. The line of sight is orchestrated by adjusting the angles of each block, fine-tuned by overlapping two rows of blocks in some places. In areas with a single row, the view is set in one direction. The material used for the blocks is made by replacing a portion of cement, with an industrial byproduct and adding a carbon dioxide-absorbing material for less CO2 emissions during production.

The collection of ceramic objects created by French designer Jacques Monneraud looks as if they were made of pieces of cardboard, taped together. After a series of research and testing of different types of clay and a variety of consistencies, Monneraud landed on a mix that evoked the texture of cardboard. The precise application of thin glaze on the unglazed pieces is used to emulate a delicately-applied piece of clear tape. The most challenging part, the designer admits, is to craft corrugation.

Any type of paper can be used to create the A4 Candle by Japanese designer Kazuhiro Yamanaka. Attached to the end of the paper, a small coin-battery LED is activated by rolling the sheet, which forms a type of candlestick. The lamp is automatically off when the paper is flat again. One of the images shows a sheet of paper with a rough edge, created by tearing the paper, which mimics the uneven surface of melted wax.

Named The Perch, a striking trapezoidal structure has been developed by architect Nicole Blair to fit just above an existing bungalow in Austin, USA. The studio space rests on four steel columns, piercing through the bungalow's walls below to resist lateral forces. Prefabricated Corten steel was craned into place to minimally disturb the site, and the cantilevered form gently sways in the wind, a reminder of its construction.

Japanese sculptor and author Yuka Morii has re-imagined Go, an abstract Chinese strategy board game for two players, in which the aim is to surround more territory than the opponent. Titled Nego, a play on "neko," the Japanese word for cat, this version invites the players to fit the most cats on the board by taking turns placing them onto a small grid.
