Five days have passed since the devastating earthquake that struck Syria. It is necessary now to move from the initial emergency response that the state and society launched to an organized response to deal with the repercussions and effects of the earthquake.

For this purpose, Mr. President Bashar al-Assad and Mrs. Asma al-Assad met with members of the Operations Room in Aleppo city, which includes governmental agencies, organizations, civil associations, commercial and industrial entities that manage the relief file in the areas affected by the earthquakein Aleppo.

His Excellency and Mrs. Asma listened to a description of the current reality following the earthquake, the buildings that were directly destroyed, the number of victims that resulted from this destruction, and the mechanisms that were put in place, whether in terms of removing the rubble and recovering the victims, or in terms of the emergency response in order to provide relief materials for the people in shelters.

The Operations Room members indicated that a quick and direct field inventory was carried out to inlist people who need relief and to divide the city into sectors in order to facilitate work. As a result of this inventory, a single database was developed in order to identify the targeted group and classify the people among those affected in whole or in part and thus determine the needs, in addition to coordinating with the engineering authorities to assess the buildings status.

President al-Assad, in his discussion with the members of the Operations Room, said, "We know the love of the people of Aleppo for their city, and this is a point of strength upon which the state institutions rely in their work during crises." He considered that government support in these times becomes worthless if it is not based on a civil and local vision based mainly on prioritizing needs.

President al-Assad indicated the importance of thinking systematically so that we would have, in the coming days, a plan for projects that could help Aleppo to recover after the earthquake disaster, and penefits from recovery plans of the disaster to develop modern visions that serve the city without stopping at the effects of the disaster only, stressing the importance of setting a timetable and defining the responsibility and mission of each party accurately.
