I am Shokoofeh Azarmasouleh, a former political prisoner, human rights activist, and one of the justice-seeking families of the 1980s. I write this letter not only to you, but to all human beings whose hearts beat for peace, justice, and freedom.
As one of the survivors of the suppressed generation of the 1980s, I consider it my duty to draw your attention to the crimes of the Islamic Republic regime under the leadership of Ali Khamenei; a regime that not only systematically represses its own people, but also severely endangers regional and global security through its support for international terrorism.
In the 1980s, my family was executed by the government of Ruhollah Khomeini solely because of their different political beliefs. What happened to us was only a small part of a عظیم catastrophe that left thousands of Iranian families in mourning during those years. My family, like thousands of others, was executed in trials lasting only a few minutes, without the right to defense, and by direct order of Khomeini. What happened to us was only a small part of a vast tragedy that plunged thousands of Iranian families into grief during those years. I am only one of the survivors of a generation that became the victim of one of the most horrific organized massacres in the contemporary history of Iran. My family, like thousands of others, was executed in trials lasting only a few minutes and without the right to defense, by direct order of Khomeini. To this day, the burial places of many of them remain unknown. Mass graves such as Khavaran are living evidence of these crimes.
But this was only the beginning of the cycle of bloodshed and repression. The Islamic Republic is a government that has built its foundations on violence, lies, and intimidation. For more than four decades, the systematic repression of journalists, writers, students, workers, women, minorities, and even children has continued.
In the chain murders of the 1990s, intellectuals such as Dariush and Parvaneh Forouhar, Fereydoun Farrokhzad, and others were brutally murdered in their own homes. During the Green Movement of 2009, hundreds of people were killed by gunfire in the streets. In November 2019, the regime’s Revolutionary Guards killed more than 1,500 protesters within just a few days through direct shooting.
In recent years, the world witnessed the killing of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who lost her life at the hands of the so-called “morality police.” Her death ignited the “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising, but the regime’s response once again was bullets, torture, and imprisonment. Nika Shakarami, a 16-year-old teenager, disappeared and her body was later found bearing signs of torture and sexual assault. Kian Pirfalak, a 9-year-old child, was shot and killed in front of his mother’s eyes. These are only a few names among thousands of victims of this regime’s crimes.
But the catastrophe reached its peak during the popular protests of Dey 1404. Today, the people of Iran are facing a regime armed to the teeth that has killed more than 12,000 people in just two days. For more than five days, this regime has completely cut off the internet and all means of communication to prevent the voices of defenseless Iranian people from reaching the world. This widespread, targeted, and organized massacre is a clear example of crimes against humanity and a continuation of the same genocidal policy of the 1980s, now pursued with the same brutality. This scale of mass killing is not a temporary suppression, but a genocide and an explicit crime against the people of Iran.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps — an institution that your government rightly designated as a terrorist organization — is not only responsible for repression, torture, and executions inside Iran, but also serves as the main arm of terror and destabilization in the Middle East, from Lebanon and Syria to Iraq and Yemen.
