▪️"Oh Allah, do not hold me to account for what they say, make me better than what they think of me and forgive me for that which they do not know"▪️
Answered by Shaykh Abu Hamza Hassan bin Muhammed Ba Shu'ayb - may Allah preserve him- on the 26th, Thil-Qi'dah, 1438H
📝🔹Question:
Oh Shaykh Aba Hamza, what is the supplication which is said when having been praised?
And is the narration from Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, saying: "Oh Allah, do not hold me to account for what they say, make me better than what they think of me and forgive me for that which they do not know", when someone praised him authentic?
📩🔸Answer:
The chain of narration leading to Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, is not authentic, but its attribution to the salaf, without specifying it to a person, is authentic.
On the authority of 'Adiy bin Artaah, from a person who was in their midst, to have said: when they [i.e the salaf] would be praised and it fell on their ears they would say: "Oh Allah, do not hold me to account for what they say, forgive me for that which they do not know".
And the wording "make me better than what they think of me" is not present in this.
This narration is found with Ibn Abi Shaybah with an authentic chain of narration, likewise with Al-Bukhari in (Adab-ul-Mufrad) with the wording: "A man [would]..."
Likewise this statement has been said by Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal.
Al-Marwudhi mentioned in (War') 494:
"I said to Abu 'Abdillah [Imaam Abu 'Abdillah Ahmed bin Hanbal]: "some of the Muhadith's have mentioned to me that Abu 'Abdillah does not only have zuhd (asceticism) in regards to Dirham's [i.e wealth] but rather people [generally]", whereby he, Abu 'Abdillah, replied: "who am i to have zuhd regarding the people, when the people want to have zuhd in my regards", and then Abu 'Abdillah said: "i ask Allah to make me better than what they think of me and to forgive me for that which they do not know." After the 'salaams' if he performed the 'salaams' and forgot to complete a part of his prayer, or added actions to the prayers, or at the instance of forgetting then realising and then coming to a conclusion of what was the right thing to for him, then continuing from there on.

▪Where does one look in the prayer?▪️
Shaykh Abu Hamza Hassan bin Muhammed Ba Shu'ayb - may Allah preserve him- said:
“Where does the one praying look during his prayer?
The opinion of the majority of the Scholars is the recommendation of looking at the place of prostration in all the prayer, except for the position of Tashahhud. He looks at his index finger [in this position]. They have for this opinion Ahaadith, however all of them are weak except the fact that looking at the place of prostration is closer to Khushoo’.
As for looking at the index finger in the position of Tashahhud, then there is the Hadith of Abdullah ibn az-Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him):
كَانَ إِذَا قَعَدَ فِي التَّشَهُّدِ وَضَعَ كَفَّهُ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَأَشَارَ بِالسَّبَّابَةِ لاَ يُجَاوِزُ بَصَرُهُ إِشَارَتَهُ
When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sat to say the tashahhud, he placed his left hand on his left thigh and pointed with his forefinger, and his gaze did not go beyond he finger with which he was pointing.
Reported by Ahmad (4/3), Abu Dawood (no. 990), and Nasaai (no. 1274). Graded authentic by al-Albani.
The Malikiyyah took the opinion to look forward. Their proof is:
1. The Hadith of Baraa ibn ‘Azib (may Allah be pleased with him):
وَكَانَ، غَيْرَ كَذُوبٍ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا إِذَا صَلَّوْا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ قَامُوا قِيَامًا حَتَّى يَرَوْنَهُ قَدْ سَجَدَ.
Whenever we offered prayer with the Prophet (ﷺ) and he raised his head from the bowing, we used to remain standing till we saw him prostrating [Bukhari no. 747]
2. The Hadith of Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the Eclipse prayer:
قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، رَأَيْنَاكَ تَنَاوَلُ شَيْئًا من مَقَامِكَ
O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! We saw you trying to take something while standing at your place [Reported by Bukhari no. 748]
So in these Ahaadith is the evidence that those behind the Imam look at their Imam.
Bukhari placed a chapter: (Raising the eyes to the Imam in prayer)
Ibn Battal rahimahullah said: “In this Hadith is evidence for Malik that the gaze of the one praying is towards the Qiblah”
Hafidh Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy upon) said: “It is possible that the meaning of the chapter is that the origin of the one behind the Imam is to gaze at the place of the prostration because that is desirable for Khushoo’ except if he needs to look at what the Imam is doing to follow his example. And Allah Knows Best” [Fathul-Bar (2/233)]
He also said: “It is possible to separate between the Imam and the one who is behind the Imam. So it is recommended for the Imam to look at the place of prostration. Likewise the one behind the Imam except when he needs to observe his Imam. As for the one who is alone, then his ruling is the ruling of the Imam” [Fathul-Bari (2/232)]
Al-Albani rahimahullah said: “It is a good combination [between the evidences]”

▪️Prayer beads▪️
Answered by Shaykh Abu Hamza Hassan bin Muhammed Ba Shu'ayb - may Allah preserve him- on the 8th, Jumada Al-Aakhirah, 1440H
📝🔹Question:
What's the ruling concerning prayer beads?
And does it reach the level of innovation or is it an affair of permissible differing?
📩🔸Answer:
Performing the remembrances with it is considered an innovation upon that which correct and chosen in this affair.
And upon this are the fatawaa of Al-Albaani and Al-Waadi'ee, may Allah have mercy upon them, likewise Shaykh 'Abdulmuhsin Al-'Abaad, may Allah preserve him, declared the beads to be an innovation, and when we investigate the affair we find the narrations which mention using pebbles in the remembrance of Allah all to be unauthentic.
Likewise it has not been authentically affirmed from neither Abu Hurayrah nor other than him from the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, to have used pebbles in the remembrance of Allah, rather it has been authentically established from Ibn Mas'uud and Abu Moosa to have rebuked the individuals that had a circle of remembrance in a masjid using pebbles to count their remembrances, whereby Ibn Mas'uud is reported to have said: "count your sins".
And those that have fatawaa permitting this rely upon unauthentic narrations and likewise upon (istihsaanaat) bettering an affair.
And the best of guidance and example is that of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and he would use his hand in counting the rembrances.

▪️A traveller shortened and combined the prayers, he then went to sit in the Masjid and they prayed but he didn’t pray with them▪️
Answered by Shaykh Abu Hamza Hassan bin Muhammed Ba Shu'ayb - may Allah preserve him- on the 10th, Jumada Al-Aakhirah, 1440H
📩🔹Question:
There is a traveler who has shortened and combined the prayer due to him being a traveller and then entered the masjid before the 'asr prayer and sat through the 'asr prayer and did not pray with the congregation, and when I enquired concerning this he replied "I have already shortened and combined [the prayers]".
What's the ruling of this action of his?
📩🔸Answer:
Him sitting in the masjid while the people are praying is a mistake, the correct thing to do was to pray the prayer with the people and it would've been supererogatory.
