True democracy is unattainable and trying to reach it leads to decay.
PS: This is a very opinionated piece, it is my own reflection on the topic.
There is one major argument that convinces me of this, and it's the following:
Humans are not uniform, they're all different and will disagree on a variety of topics.
As such, a society led by the desire of the people (voting) will always have a "majority" (if it's around 50% it's stupid to call it that), and an opposition.
As a result, no matter what the people decide, they won't unanimously agree on it.
Which makes democracy a myth because there will always be a consequent part of the population that disagree or think the complete opposite should be in place.
Here is the thing:
The larger the society, the less possible it becomes to achieve true democracy (which btw never existed, just so you know).
Another massive point:
The mass tends to be wrong.
Ever heard of group thinking (Argumentum Ad Populum).
And here is where this actually becomes dangerous:
Groupthink is easily influenced.
By something called propaganda.
You've heard many on Twitter talk about programming.
Well, if you're being programmed, then how can you claim that your vote is truly yours.
Masses are weak.
If you want real democracy, build a small tribe.
For country-sized societies, monarchy is the way.

Take what serves you:
In order for your ego to serve you and match your value, you should never take anything for face value.
Understand that people can only perceive you from their own level of perception, which is subjective and doesn't have to do with you.
It's in fact their projection and
interpretation of who you are, not who you truly are and who you know yourself to be.
Another thing to keep in mind, is that everything is circumstantial and situation-specific.
As such, even people's reactions do not sum up what they think of you nor who you are.
If someone is criticizing you for something, disregard the tone and focus on the core point they're trying to make.
Ask yourself:
Is their intention to give me feedback?
If so, take the advice and ditch the way it was presented in case they're aggressive or simply unpleasant when giving you feedback.
The trick is not just to learn to differentiate between feedback and criticism.
The trick is to extract the feedback from criticism and ignore the noise.
Even your haters can teach you things, but you get into the blame game, you're doomed to become like them and hate them back.
Which doesn't serve your personal growth.
Instead, start taking everything as genuine advice.
There is a saying that I love:
Take what serves you, ditch the rest.
This way, you make both your haters AND your friends help you grow.
Everything is a positive, nothing is negative.
Everything is circumstantial, nothing is personal.
Overgrow those who want to pull you down by not dignifying their malicious attempts with your attention, because you're worth more than that.
Watch them help you get closer to your ideal self, and don't forget to thank them once you get there.
