So one thing that will help you develop this skill is working on your orientation sense.

Meaning, you should memorize roads and be able to extrapolate what you see on a map.

When I go to a new place, first thing I do is locate where I am on a map then walk/drive around to see what the things on the map are.

This is a work of learning by association.

You put an image on a map and it gives you a better idea of where you are.

This might sound basic, but it raises your awareness and makes you more aware of patterns.

I graduated geography and was always very good at orientation. I help people get to their destination using google maps or other apps even if i only see where they are on a map. I never thought there was a link between intelligence and orientation skills. But yeah, many people do think I am pretty smart. The map usually stays more or less in my mind and slowly i don't need it anymore regardless of the place.
