how i overcame my youtube tutorial addiction aka the tutorial hell

we've all been there - endlessly scrolling through youtube tutorials hoping to learn a new skill

only to walk away just as confused as when we started 🥲.

if this sounds familiar, keep reading!

i used to rely on youtube tutorials for everything.

want to learn react? youtube it.

html and css? youtube to the rescue.

i spend hours watching videos, without retaining anything.

but i soon realized this passive learning style wasn't working.

because of that i had to look for an effective approach

i call this "the hands-on approach" or the "Get your hands dirty" approach 😁

so i made a change. instead of my default youtube searches i start doing this instead:

* read the documentation - i know, so boring! but carefully going through the official docs helps me grasp the fundamentals.

* follow along by coding - instead of just watching someone code, i write the code myself.

* use chatgpt for Q&A - like i said in my previous post, chat gpt is a great tool to learn something, i can ask specific question and get clear explanations

* then watch tutorials - after getting the basic down , i'll watch videos to reinforce and expand my knowledge.

So next time you find yourself trapped in an endless YouTube spiral, remember - reading, writing, and asking questions are the keys to effective learning. The videos can wait!

you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with

i know, I know, you already know the quote, right?

However, not everyone is paying attention to it and bringing it into their lives.

I have a younger sister, who became a fluent Dutch speaker in a short amount of time. I was stunned when she spoke fluently over the phone.

I asked her where she learned the language, and she didn't even tell me.

Her answer was simple:

her: "that's how I speak with my friends"

me: "duh, there is no way you speak like that just by hanging out with your friend"

The moment I asked her this question, I realized it was stupid.

In fact, you learn so much from your friends.

I became a better developer by surrounding myself with like-minded people who always keep me in check.

I have been actively participating in the developer community, and everything I do leads me to where I am right now.

The point is, if you really have an ambition to be someone or something, then you have to be extra cautious about who you spend your time with.

"you can't be an entrepreneur if you spend your time with individuals who don't have any ambitions"

* start networking

* join mastermind groups

* enroll in skill-building workshops

Remember, the key is to actively seek out and engage in activities that align with your goals and values.

okay, how can you maximize your visibility ?

here are some of my tips

1) optimize your profile: your profile is one of the things a potential recruiter or client sees and gets a grasp on who you are and what you do (i believe you've heard about first impressions) so your profile is your first impression weapon to use it. how to optimize you ask ?

- have a professional photo
- your banner should reflect your profession
- utilize about section to showcase your mission and what sets you apart

2) engage with meaning: don't do mass-connecting , focus on building meaningful connections, engage with relevant posts to your profession

- like someone's content if you find it useful
- leave a good and positive comment
- repost with your thoughts

3) seek endorsements and recommendation: well this is also important, because, it builds credibility and gives you authority and trustworthiness on the platform
- seek colleagues and clients to give you a recommendation
