Do you think that all businesses should accept cash?

Rep. Joseph Chaplik believes that Cash is King - and his bill #HB2555 passed unanimously through Rep. Justin Wilmeth's commerce committee earlier this year. It would require businesses to accept cash.

As noted by Rep. Justin Heap, this bill would ensure that people who live on cashed checks are able to thrive.

The bill didn't have time for a hearing in the Senate this year - but will likely be brought back in the future!

Did you know that banks try to keep your data FOREVER? Even after decades and if you've moved states?

Rep. Neal Carter of LD15, an East Valley YR, brought forth a constituent-driven bill to address this problem and it passed unanimously through AZ State Rep. Justin Wilmeth's commerce committee.

The bill, #HB2066, makes it so the banks have to delete your personal information after a decade. It was signed into law!

For those wondering why the bill was set to ten years instead of the seven set by federal law, Rep. Heap and Rep. Carter discuss it here as Rep. Carbone concurs.

There is a 3 year audit period which was given as leeway on top of the seven years to help businesses adjust to the change and deal with the IRS.

Why don't AZ Democrats want our children saying the pledge of allegiance!?

Rep. Barbara Parker introduced #HB2523, a bill which would require publicly funded schools to recite the pledge every day.

Despite Rep. Parker making it extremely clear that families could opt out of participating, all Democrats voted NO on the bill. Democratic Rep. Nancy Gutierrez said that she voted NO because she believes in "separation of Church and State" and took issue with the inclusion of the words "under God" in the pledge.

Rep. Michele Pena, who grew up in a religious culture where she was not permitted to say the pledge as a Jehovah's Witness, was dumbfounded by any opposition to the bill. She was always allowed to have exemptions growing up and it was fine for her - why shouldn't exemptions be fine for others?

The bill passed on a party line through Beverly Pingerelli and @DaveMarshallAZ 's Education committee. There wasn't time to hear it in the Senate this year, unfortunately.

Is this the scariest bill Katie Hobbs has vetoed so far?

...Are you a fan of social credit scores?

Well, Hobbs vetoed a super simple bill from Rep. Steve Montenegro that would have banned them in Arizona.

Social credit scores basically assign you a rating based on how well you fit a cultural or social mold. Every time you deviate from that mold, your score would drop. These scores are used in China to grant or deny access to services, loans, and more. They could even be used to deny you access to your own phone or car.

Hobbs vetoed #HB2472 because she says that social credit scores aren't currently happening here.

...does that mean she wouldn't act upon them until they are here? ...or not at all? What!?

Arizona’s Water Situation: Explained by a Native Arizonan

With population growth, rivers drying up, 13% water rate hikes in Phoenix, Tucson supposedly running out of water in a decade, and Saudi farming deals - what's happening in Arizona!?

Well, despite all of the headlines and fearmongering - the situation isn't actually as bad as some would make it out to be.

As Phoenix grew, so did the county and state's water conservation methods. In the early 1900s, the Salt River Project was established and repurposed many of the old Hohokam canals as part of its modern system. More recently, the Central Arizona Project was established to bring water directly from the Colorado River to Arizona's population centers.

We've been forced into more serious conservation methods than nearby states largely as a result of the 1922 Colorado River Compact which gives Arizona less of an allotment from the river than California and requires Arizona to take cuts before the Californians.

Arizona currently sources 36% of its water from the Colorado River, 18% from other in-state rivers, 41% from groundwater, and 5% from reclaimed water.

Rechargeable aquifers are usually filled by the CAP in their domain - and without recharging - the aquifers would generally be depleted in about a decade. To alleviate these issues - Arizona might need new dams and reservoirs to catch water going downriver.

Arizona needs to expand its renewable water resources while making these resources cheap and easily accessible to rural Arizonans who have been dependent on groundwater for over a century. If we can constantly recharge our groundwater - fantastic. If alternate methods are needed - we'll pursue them.

Foreign entities, most notably Saudi company Fondomonte, have taken advantage of a deal that allows them to pump our water at $25/acre. While Attorney General Kris Mayes has made some efforts against these entities, foreign entities still utilize thousands of acres of Arizonan land to pump dozens of thousands of acre-feet of Arizonan water per year.

And in Phoenix? Well, the CAP tried to help out and not put the burden on regular civilians by making strategic cuts that benefitted Phoenix - but the Phoenix City Council voted for a 13% rate hike anyways.

Kari Lake has suggested that the state should begin desalinating water near Yuma and consider construction of pipelines from the Mississippi or Missouri river basins. While expensive, experts generally agree that these megaprojects would work.

+ Rep. Kolodin has been a vocal proponent of desalinating our brackish groundwater as a cheaper alternative to desalinating oceanwater.

Needless to say, there are plenty of options that we can take in the future to secure Arizona's long-term water.

So, in summary, AZ has a long, layered history of water management and conservation. Despite receiving the short stick in the Colorado River Compact, Arizona has well managed its water and is actually reversing the course of a shortage and water levels are rising. While non-renewable sources such as groundwater are on a timer, we are slowly shifting away from them as myriad viable megaprojects are proposed for long-term security. While we have to be smart about our water usage both now and going forward, we are absolutely poised for future successes.

Today, the Legislature passed a death resolution concerning the late Sandra Day O'Connor and a resolution stating Arizona's unanimous support for Israel. Additionally, many members joined together on the lawn for a presentation on ESAs where we laid out our plan for 2024.

I look forward to keeping you up to date with the Legislature throughout 2024 and to representing you in person next year!

Would you vote for legislation that requires people to be citizens to vote and that prevents people from voting for more than one candidate in a given race?

HCR2001 is a great piece of legislation introduced this year by Representatives Alex Kolodin, @AustinForArizona , and Selina Bliss alongside Senator Shawnna Bolick. This concurrent resolution would do just those things if it is able to make it through both chambers and the voters - regardless of what the 9th Floor thinks.

I'd vote for this piece of legislation. What are your thoughts?

Recently, Governor Glenn Youngkinin in VA signed a bipartisan bill prohibiting police quotas. This year, AZ Representatives Alex Kolodin, Analise Ortiz, Justin Heap, John Gillette, Cory McGarr, David Marshall, and Neal Carter have introduced a bipartisan bill doing the same in Arizona.

A study done in 2015 found that as tickets declined during the early 2000s, so did traffic injuries and fatalities. Additionally, 8 in 10 officers were found in a National Police Research Platform study to be concerned that their agency is measuring amount of activity over quality of work.

Our officers don't want to fill quotas. Most citizens are opposed to quotas on both sides of the aisle. I'm happy to see this bipartisan piece of legislation and am curious to see how Hobbs responds to it.

Photo radar cameras are extraordinarily unpopular in Arizona. Kari Lake made it part of her platform to get rid of them during her gubernatorial campaign, and legislators from both sides of the aisle voted to pass the bill to prohibit them last year.

Senator @WendyRogersAZ has introduced a new resolution, SCR1001, which will go directly to the people and ask us if we want to continue Arizona's photo radar policies.
