The ego wants enlightenment because it imagines enlightenment will make it happier, more powerful, more special, or more peaceful. But awakening is precisely the recognition that the separate ego is itself an appearance within consciousness.
You don't need to become something extraordinary.
You need to see through the illusion of what you thought you were. Everything you experience... your thoughts, emotions, sensations, relationships, successes, failures, and even your sense of being a separate person appears within consciousness.
Instead of constantly trying to control your experience, investigate the consciousness in which the entire experience is appearing.
