🐧The most inaccurate technical prediction in the history of our industry turns 35 today. Its author was 21.

On August 25, 1991, Linus Torvalds posted to comp.os.minix: "I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu)."
In the same message he warned that it was NOT portable and would probably never support anything other than AT-harddisks — because that was the only hardware he owned.

The facts after that:

▎Version 0.01 shipped on September 17, 1991. About ten thousand lines of code.
▎He didn't choose the name. He called the project Freax. An admin at a Finnish FTP server dropped the files into a directory called linux, and it stuck.
▎February 1992 — the kernel is released under the GPL. That is where the real thing happened. Technically 0.01 was not remarkable. Legally it became something nobody could close, buy outright, or take away.

💻 Today: all 500 machines on the TOP500 list run Linux. More than 15,000 people have contributed to the kernel. Around 40 million lines. Android, data centers, cars, payment terminals, satellites.

The man who wrote "won't be big and professional like gnu" was wrong about every word in that sentence — and published it anyway.
