Stare legendy głoszą, że w dniu Proletii Jaryło ubrany w białe szaty i wianek ze świeżych szkarłatnych maków przechadza się po polach, trzymając w dłoniach kłosy wiosennego chleba. W miejscach, w których kroczy stopa dobrego boga, pojawiają się wczesne pędy.
W ciągu dnia kobiety przygotowują tzw. „Owsiankę majową”, wszyscy mieszkańcy gminy zbierają się przy nakrytym stole, święcie towarzyszą masowe festyny.
W niektórych osadach istniał zwyczaj wykonywania kukły ze słomy, którą stawiano na wzgórzu. Podobiznę podpalono i tańczono wokół niej, aż spłonęła całkowicie.
Zgodnie ze starożytną tradycją prawie każde święto związane ze zmianą pór roku powinno być oświetlone wieloma światłami.
Na Proletie wraz z nadejściem nocy starano się rozpalać jak najwięcej ognisk – w ten sposób podkreślano szacunek dla Żywy. Uważa się, że im więcej rozpalonych zostanie ognisk i im wyższy będzie ich płomień, tym cieplejsze będzie nadchodzące lato; w przeciwnym razie Żywa może się obrazić, a latem będą towarzyszyły deszcze, mrozy i inne zjawiska, które są katastrofalne dla plonów."
