Tony Burke’s planned speech announcing tougher migration controls was cancelled at the last minute after Labor ministers reportedly raised concerns about backlash from the Greens and accusations the government was “demonising migrants”.
The delay comes as net overseas migration remains above target and One Nation gains support. Labor insists the crackdown will still proceed, including tighter deportation appeal rules, but the announcement has now been pushed back.

A 57-year-old man has been charged after allegedly chasing two 12-year-old boys through Mildura’s Langtree Mall and striking them with his Ford Ranger, leaving both seriously injured. Police are investigating whether the incident was linked to damage at a nearby shopfront shortly beforehand.
Mildura MP Jade Benham told 9News it was alleged the man was defending his wife’s business, which had been targeted before. While condemning the attack, she said the community is “so fed up with the rinse and repeat justice system that is Victoria right now.”

Melbourne shopkeeper Van Viet Truong, 60, died after allegedly being bashed by a group of youths when he stepped in to stop them stealing from a nearby store in Sunshine.
A 15-year-old boy remains in custody charged with manslaughter, but two 14-year-old girls and a 12-year-old boy have been granted bail. The court cited factors including their age, lack of criminal history and alleged roles in the attack.
The decisions have sparked anger in the community, with Truong remembered as a well-known local who had run his grocery store with his wife for 30 years.

Pauline Hanson has accused Labor of disguising its migration policy as a crackdown while still planning for roughly another one million net migrants over the next four years.
Hanson says Australians have little reason to trust the government’s numbers after migration repeatedly exceeded Labor’s own forecasts, including a forecast of 235,000 in 2022 before more than 538,000 was recorded.
Labor is expected to keep net overseas migration at around 225,000 a year from 2027. Hanson argues continued high migration will keep adding pressure to housing, rents and public services.

The Coalition says it would cut net overseas migration to below 180,000 a year, arguing immigration levels should be tied to how many new homes Australia can actually build.
Shadow Housing Minister Andrew Bragg says the cuts would come through fewer family and international student visas, while also proposing a major simplification of Australia’s construction rules to make homes cheaper to build.
One Nation is pushing even further, calling for a 130,000 visa cap and arguing Australians should not be forced to compete with continued high migration for already scarce housing.
