Australia’s national median rent has climbed to a record $705 a week, with renters now spending roughly a third of household income just to keep a roof over their heads.
The surge comes after years of population growth outpacing new housing supply, with net overseas migration remaining well above historical levels. Rental listings are also around 17% below the five-year average, leaving too many people competing for too few homes.

🚨 UPDATE: US ANALYSTS RAISE CONCERNS OVER AUSTRALIA’S URANIUM DEAL WITH INDIA
U.S. security analysts have raised concerns over Australia’s decision to supply uranium to India, warning that civilian nuclear imports could free up India’s domestic uranium for its nuclear weapons program.
India is a nuclear-armed state and has never signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The Albanese Government has defended the deal, insisting Australian uranium will be restricted to peaceful nuclear energy use under international safeguards.

A Melbourne chef, Thawat Prommachan, convicted of two counts of sexual assault has avoided prison, instead receiving a two-year community corrections order and 250 hours of unpaid community work.
The court heard the victim repeatedly said “no”, while Prommachan later told police it was “hard to stop once in the mood”. Judge Kate Hawkins accepted evidence that imprisonment would be especially harsh because Prommachan identifies as transgender, citing increased risks of violence, segregation and limited access to gender-affirming treatment in custody.
