Enquanto a França se prepara para eleições legislativas antecipadas, os seus partidos políticos coligam-se uns contra os outros, acusando-se de cedência a formas diferentes de extremismo. A inquietação que eles manifestam e a violência que suscitam não estão à altura do desafio. Todos relevam os erros passados dos outros, mas nenhum analisa as razões da profunda crise de sociedade que atravessa o país e com ele todo o Ocidente. Ora, o problema não é resolver esta ou aquela lacuna, mas sim mudar radicalmente o paradigma da acção política e adaptá-lo a uma sociedade cuja economia é agora baseada na informática e não mais na indústria.

Change is in the air.

I’ve written previously on the panic currently effervescing through the global elites, made viscerally apparent at conclaves like the Davos forum earlier this year. But in America particularly, a deep worry is now consciously gnawing the ruling class—they can see it, feel it: that the American Empire is on its last legs, close to collapse.

A handy historical rule of thumb: when debt service costs of a mighty empire exceed its defense spending, the mighty empire is at an end. So far, this rule has held for the Ottoman, Russian and British empires; the US empire is testing it now. The Congressional Budget Office found that the federal government has spent more on paying interest on the national debt than on the military in fiscal year 2024. US defense spending is roughly $1 trillion a year — and debt service payment will be even higher.
