SUBSTANCE OF POWER: WHITE GOLD // May 23 đ
Taking LĂŒneburgâs natural resources as its starting point, the exhibition UNDER/CURRENTS traces how raw materials circulate, how they infiltrate biological systems, and how economic power relations crystallise around them â in which we are all inevitably implicated. The extraction and circulation of raw materials not only leave ecological footprints, but also affect social fabrics and political dynamics. Artists GOSIA LEHMANN and VALERIAN BLOS demonstrate how these powerful substances influence our daily routines and environments. To mark the end of the exhibition, they host a performative dinner with a special ingredientââwhite goldâ. Please register at: info@halle-fuer-kunst.de.

Last year, the artist and activist Hadas Emma Kedar (Jewish Voice) and students4Palestine LĂŒneburg were disinvited from the lunatic Festival at short notice. In times of more and more left-wing spaces being attacked and human rights trampled underfoot, we say: stand up, show solidarity, make your voices heard! Cascade Concerts // May 31 đ·
The concert series features renowned local musicians. Kicking things off on May 31, 2026, is âDein Onkel dritten Grades,â a singer-songwriter quintet with a mix of blues and chanson in their repertoire. The uncle has the blues, and so youâll find blues elements in every one of his songs, even if some sound like chanson or singer-songwriter music at first listen. He accompanies his smoky voice on the guitar. His primarily German lyrics deal with life in harbor bars, bad jobs and good opportunities, warm drinks and cold women, love and ruin - but always with a wink.

Digital Worlds - AI & Co. in Literature and Society: Can AI Do Kafka? // 31.05. đ [German]
Unthinkable Encounters â Franz Kafkaâs âAmerikaâ Meets AI Texts: In his performative reading from the novel fragment âAmerika,â Jan-Philip Walter Heinzel, a member of the Theater LĂŒneburg acting ensemble, brings to life the memorable encounters of the protagonist, Karl RoĂmann. These are juxtaposed with texts read by an AI-generated voice, which were created by an AI module. The prompts (commands for generating the texts) by J. Georg Brandt aim to transpose the story of the novel fragment into the present day. The event holds surprises and raises very interesting questions about the possibilities, weaknesses, and general critical aspects of AI.

On Sunday, May 31, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the focus will be on creative upcycling under the theme âFrom Scrap to Treasure.â This open, hands-on event invites visitors to create imaginative works of art from scrap parts, leftover materials, and found objects. Individual pieces are reassembled and transformed into humorous and sometimes whimsical one-of-a-kind creations. This is where recycling meets creativity and art.

What Moves Us: Jana Hensel Reads from "Once Upon a Time There Was a Land" // June 03 đ [German]
In her new book, Jana Hensel recounts the end of a great dream. For what began over 35 years ago as the dawn of a new era is now being strongly questioned by a growing number of East Germans and thus threatens to come to an endâdemocracy in East Germany. With keen insight, Hensel describes the long journey to the rightâa journey that for many East Germans began on the leftâthrough a reunified Federal Republic that's itself currently mired in a deep crisis. Hensel doesn't shy away from hard truths and doesn't subscribe to common narratives about the East.

âThe Little Mermaidâ tells a story of love, transformation, the desire to overcome boundaries. MusicalLabor takes this material and creates its own underwater world where fairy tales, mythology, and modern retellings converge. But the balance of the seas is under threat: with technology and hubris, humans are overstepping the boundaries of nature. The sea creatures therefore seek counsel from the sea goddess Sedna. With songs by Enya, John Lennon, ABBA, Peter Plate, and Billie Eilish, humans and sea creatures set out together in search of new utopias. They question old orders, dare to embrace change, and seek a responsible coexistence.

We see it every dayâthe increasingly fierce and intense battle for power and dominance in the digital media. But who is actually fighting whom? Renowned media scholar Martin Andree shows how a coalition of dark tech, Trump, and right-wing populists is openly reaching for autocratic power. Through digital monopolies, it is increasingly controlling the public sphere. With each passing day, it becomes harder to save our free world. Will we still be able to turn things around? Or will the Western world end up in division, chaos, or even civil war? Andree teaches media studies at the University of Cologne.

NON-PRODUCTIVE READERS is a reading group for informal discussions about art, cultural theory and experimental writing that was initiated by Bryony Dawson in 2022. Based on a changing set of texts, the group loosely explores modes of passivity, ambivalence, failure and refusal as vital aspects of creative and institutional practice. This session is dedicated to Anne Carson's essay Variations on the Right to Remain Silent (2016). Tracing a line through the paintings of Francis Bacon, the trial of Joan of Arc, and the translations of Hölderlin, Carson writes in defence of the untranslatable: the blanks, gaps, and refusals that arise when words are dragged over from one language to another. No prior knowledge or background in art or cultural theory is requiredâonly a motivation to read and think with others. Lurking listeners are always welcome. READING GROUP WITH BRYONY DAWSON // June 13 đŒ
Cantata Service // June 14 âȘïž
On Sunday, June 14, we will hold a festive cantata service here at St. Michaelis, during which church music will unfold in all its splendor: The St. Michaelis Chamber Choir, the ensemble reflektor, along with Lovis Kriese (soprano), Jakob Schuld (tenor), and Laurenz Voss (bass) will perform Johann Sebastian Bachâs festive cantata âPraise the Lord, the Mighty King of Glory.â This cantata, with a magnificent orchestral arrangement featuring strings, oboes, trumpets, timpani, and organ, is a musical fireworks display: Each of the cantataâs five movements is based on a verse of the wonderful hymn âLobe den Herren,â which remains one of the most famous Protestant hymns to this day. Bach demonstrates his full mastery by setting each verse to music in a completely individual way: The spectrum ranges from virtuoso choral settings with magnificent orchestral interludes full of trumpet brilliance, through simple choral settings, to arias in which singers and instrumentalists (violin and trumpet) engage in a soloistic dialogue. The service begins at 10:00 a.m.; the sermon will be delivered by Pastor Annegret Bettex. Look forward to a service featuring church music at its finest!
