[Skull of a Skeleton with a Burning Cigarette]

Vincent Van Gogh, 1885-86
Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

A bold piece of 19th-century art-punk. Van Gogh mocked the tedious academic drilling of anatomy by "bringing a dead skeleton to life" with cigarette smoke. The painting serves as a sharp irony on the solemn memento mori genre and a caricature of his own unhealthy lifestyle.
