Why decide to walk 10,000 steps a day?


One gets used to hear that we need to walk 10,000 steps a day to stay in good shape. Such a statement appeared before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, when a Japanese company produced a pedometer called "Manpo-kei," which means "10,000 step counter," and the number was chosen simply for beauty. It has since wandered from one recommendation to the next, although there is no scientific basis for it.

Walking itself is undoubtedly healthy, yet no one has conducted large-scale experiments to estimate the daily number of steps needed.
