What Kind of Purpose Makes Us Happy?
We often hear that having a purpose makes life happier and more meaningful. But new research suggests that the type of purpose we have may matter just as much as having one.
Researchers studied 528 people and identified seven types of purpose: having no purpose, survival, religious, personal-accumulative, altruistic, self-expansive, and transpersonal purpose.
Interestingly, younger people were more likely to focus on achievement, career, wealth, and status. However, this “accumulative” purpose was actually associated with lower happiness.
On the other hand, purposes connected with personal growth, helping others, and something larger than ourselves were more strongly associated with happiness.
The researchers also found that purpose tends to change with age. As people get older, they become more oriented toward altruistic and transpersonal purposes, rather than achievement and accumulation.
💡 The key lesson:
Maybe happiness doesn’t come from asking, “What can I achieve?” but rather, “What can I grow into, contribute to, or become part of?”
Sometimes, a meaningful life is not about getting more, but about becoming more and giving more.

🧠 #miniarticle | Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts
Have you ever had a strange or disturbing thought and immediately wondered, “Why did I just think that?”
The truth is, thoughts are not always a reflection of who we are.
Unwanted thoughts can appear suddenly and may be completely inconsistent with our values, beliefs, or intentions. Having a disturbing thought does not mean we agree with it, want it, or are going to act on it.
The Stoic philosophers offered an interesting way of looking at this. They believed that we cannot always control the thoughts or impressions that first enter our minds. What we can control is how we respond to them.
A thought can simply be noticed and allowed to pass.
You don’t have to analyse every thought.
You don’t have to fight every negative idea.
And you certainly don’t have to feel guilty for something your mind happened to produce.
💭 A thought is just a thought. What matters is what you choose to do with it.
