Why did people start making ice pop?

In 1905, an 11-year-old American boy named Frank Epperson accidentally left a glass of soda water and the wooden stick he was using to stir the drink on the front porch. It got cold during the night and the soda froze. The next morning the boy heated the glass under a stream of hot water, took out the contents stuck to the stick, and ate it. This was the first ice pop.

In the 1920s, Epperson obtained a patent and registered the brand name Popsicle, but soon ceded the rights to it to an outside company.
