AI can help children finish homework faster. But that speed may come with a hidden cost.
According to a recent analysis, AI may improve short-term performance, yet over time it can reduce opportunities to develop independent thinking, problem-solving, and critical reasoning. Ironically, the students who rely on AI the most may be the ones who lose the most.
The author calls this the “double cost” of AI.
The first cost is obvious: when AI does the thinking, children miss the mental effort that helps their brains grow.
The second cost is more subtle. To judge whether an AI answer is correct, you already need knowledge and critical thinking. If those skills never develop, children become even more dependent on AI—creating a cycle that’s difficult to break.
The goal isn’t to avoid AI. It’s to use it as a tool that supports learning, not one that replaces thinking.
