🔴 Rising Concerns Across U.S. Universities Amid a Surge in Arrests and Visa Revocations Targeting International Students
A compelling BBC report sheds light on the unprecedented crackdown on pro-Palestinian students in American universities:
🔻In recent weeks, many international students residing in the United States have witnessed a troubling pattern unfolding across their social media feeds: reports of visa cancellations and plainclothes agents appearing unannounced, transporting students in unmarked vehicles to detention facilities.
🔻Among those affected are Mahmoud Khalil and Mohsen Mahdavi from Columbia University, and Rumeysa Ozturk from Tufts University. None of them have been charged with any criminal offense, and it appears they have been targeted solely for participating in pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campus grounds.
🔻The publication Inside Higher Ed has launched a visa revocation tracker, identifying by April 16 at least 1,300 international students and graduates at over 200 U.S. institutions whose visas have been revoked or whose legal status has been altered by the U.S. Department of State in recent weeks.
🔻Students and faculty members told the BBC that a combination of targeted arrests and widespread visa cancellations is placing institutions—from large public universities to elite Ivy League schools—at risk. Notably, in the vast majority of cases, colleges state there is no evidence that the affected students were involved in anti-Israel protests.
🔻While student visas can be revoked for various reasons, colleges report that in some cases, visas have been canceled over minor infractions such as traffic violations, some of which occurred years ago. Several students report having no clear explanation as to why they were targeted by U.S. authorities.
🔻Under such circumstances, some students told the BBC they fear leaving their apartments—even to buy groceries—due to the risk of being detained by plainclothes officers. In response, Georgetown University has begun offering additional on-campus housing to students concerned about potential arrests at their residences.
🔻One Georgetown student told the BBC: “Given the arrests we’re seeing, I believe there’s a real possibility that anyone who has spoken out about Palestine could be detained.”
In some colleges, academic activities have also been disrupted, as international scholars decline to return to the U.S. out of concern for their safety.
🔻The White House has stated it will pursue individuals involved in activities deemed “contrary” to U.S. national interests. In the case of Mr. Khalil, authorities have cited the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, which grants the government the authority to deport individuals whose presence is considered detrimental to U.S. foreign policy.
