Just like humans when the temperature drops, the cross on the summit of Observation Hill has its winter coat!
Each year, to protect it from the ferocious winter storms, a cover is carefully installed to help minimise erosion and damage to the monument which was installed in 1913.

Ice Memory ice coring campaign on the Corbassière glacier on Grand Combin. At seven metres below the surface, the drilling team smelt that something was burning. Worried that the motor was overheating they pulled up the sample carefully and found there was plastic in the ice.

Fast ice, or landfast ice, is ice that is anchored to the shore or ocean bottom, typically over shallow ocean shelves at continental margins. Fast ice is defined by the fact that it does not move with the winds or currents.
