The virus, similar to Ebola, spreads from human to human via bodily fluids and can have a fatality rate of up to 88% - health authorities in Guinea confirmed the case of Marburg on Monday.
Symptoms include a high fever and muscle pain, with some patients later suffering bleeding from their eyes and ears - cases have been identified in other parts of Africa, such as Uganda and Kenya, but this is the first known infection in the Western part.
Contact tracing is under way, according to WHO – the patient died in the border town of Gueckedou, the location of an Ebola outbreak in Guinea between 2014-2016, which went on to kill 11,325 people.
