O most gentle Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on the souls of Thy departed servants. Be not severe in Thy judgments, but let some drops of Thy Precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames. And do Thou, O Merciful Saviour, send Thy holy angels to conduct them to a place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen

The Cardinal had agreed that one bishop only would be consecrated for the Society, and to be approved by Pope John Paul II. Shortly after the agreement, however, Archbishop Lefebvre announced that he had received a note from Cardinal Ratzinger in which he "was asked to beg pardon for his errors", which he interpreted to mean that he would be made to accept the teachings of the Second Vatican Council and the "spirit of Assisi".
Archbishop Lefebvre referred to the prophecy of Our Lady of La Salette that "Rome will lose the Faith" and declared himself obliged to consecrate a successor—if necessary, without papal approval. He then declared:
"That is why, taking into account the strong will of the present Roman authorities to reduce Tradition to naught, to gather the world to the Spirit of Vatica
